Lanai Floor suggestions
 

We are thinking about doing something with the floor in our lanai. Any suggestions? We were thinking of pavers but want to know what others have used and are happy with.

We went with tile several years ago but it is hard to keep clean. We are thinking of having Trex installed over the tile. Has anyone done this?

If one does NOT enclose the lanai, does the tile become too slippery?
What is the disadvantage of pavers in such lanai?

We tiled ours too, and also love it. We wanted something Spanish-looking to match the mediterranean style of our house and give a little color. Our tiler found this terrific textured tile that's easy to clean and not slippery at all. We don't get much water on the lanai due to gutters, so it's never been a problem, but even with occasional allover condensation it has not been too slippery.

Others have used some small kind of rock--Chatahoochee?--that looks great, but we thought it might be hard on our big dog's elbows.

We have 2 inch pavers on sand. No problem. Be sure to keep drainage in mind. The rain water will soak in but if you have a very heavy rain you could get pooling if the slope is not done correctly. Keep some extra pavers and you can make some planters.

We have a screened lanai and chose chattahoochee river rock. We love it. If we had to do it over again we would surely choose the same.

We have Chattahoochee river rock on our (screened) lanai and small birdcage.
(also our CYV walkway, front door entrance and on the garage floor)
The rocks are from 5 kinds of granite outcroppings - about the size of small aquarium gravel, but tumbled, not scratchy. Smooth enough for a barefoot baby.
A variety of mixed stone color combinations- can be custom blended.
Water permeates through it -no puddles after a rain. Ours is not slippery when wet.
I can pull the car into the garage on a rainy day without my wet tires slipping on the smooth floor. (It is not recommended for use on a sloped driveway, however. Level surfaces are best.)
Doesn't seem to hold much heat- being barefoot is no problem on the walk.
Chairs, planters glide easily and sit level on the lanai.
Should a spot get damaged, say by chemical spill, it can be spot repaired. (professionally)
It is seamless.


It is finished with a clear coat (sparkles in the sunshine) -that clear coat does require professional re- application occasionally, depending on the sun exposure. Ours will be three years old in July ( Eastern exposure on the lanai) and still looks brand new. We will probably never have to reseal the garage floor, as it is in the shade.
What I like about tile, pavers or paint/stain is the visual interest that can be created. Chattahoochee is rather plain in comparison…. but I REALLY love it.

Who installs Chattahoochee? I've never heard of it. It sounds interesting.

We have the Chattahoochee river rock and also love it. We would not have anything else after enjoying this.

We had the Chatahoochee river rock around our outdoor pool in Clearwater when the kids were growing up. We loved it for all the reasons that Uptown girl mentioned, especially the fact is was NOT slippery when wet. Our concern then was kids running around the pool. But I also loved the fact that water did not pool AT ALL on the surface.

That is what I think we will use on our Lanai for all the same reasons.

Also our pool was not under birdcage, just open to the hot sun in a fenced yard. The river rock held up great for years before needing to be re sealed.

Another option is sprayed concrete. The process sprays a base layer of concrete (you choose color). Then a template is laid for a pattern and color of your choosing. The template is then picked up. We had our lanai done 5 years ago and it is great. Process is done several ways and used on driveways also.
