DTV dish on post in yard or roof? Pros/Cons??
 

Our DirecTV is being installed tomorrow.

After reading a few of the lightening threads, I am wondering if we would be better off with the dish on a post in the yard (extra fee, as I recall) as opposed to being installed on the roof.

Is there any advantage? (lightening wise)

My feeling has been that it would just be an obstacle to avoid in the yard. But curious regarding the lightening issue.

We did get the SECO whole house surge protector. That seemed like a no brainer to us. Cheaper than replacing the new TV, computers and appliances.

I am not to sure, is a dish allowed on the roof of your home? The ARC will be able to tell you?

A few years ago we had a dish. I called the warranty dept. They said the roof's warranty would be void if we went through the shingles, so we did a post. My neighbor went through the side of the hose on the siding. Worked OK also.

I would not put a dish on your roof. If and when you remove it the shingles may be compromised. I had DTV put it on a pole next to and behind the AC unit. As far as lightning hitting it I think I would ask an expert like SECO.

Put it in the yard as close to the house as possible. dtv will have to figure out where for proper reception. agree not to put on roof. my deed restrictions prohibit that, I think. looks unsightly.

Definitely, the yard is the best option.

Directv does not tell you that you will be charged $82.00 for this installation. Their advertising says "free installation", but only if it installed on your roof. The installed is done by a thrid party but it will say Directv on their truck.

I complained, and was given additional months of channels, that I now have deleted from my account, as they will charge you, as soon as they expire.

Directv needs to train their reps better. IMHO

Do Not do a roof mount for many reasons. Wind Lighting Roof Leaks. Avoid all this by putting it on a pole!

Direct TV dish is on my roof. Sorry it is because I still lose reception during most rains and did not know about it voiding the roof warranty. Next time I'll not go through roof.

Without a doubt, put it on a pole next to your house. Also, have them agree to no installation charges. In my opinion, you should threaten to cancel the install if they won't agree to no charges for installation.

Kitty, Any deed restriction against mounting the dish on the roof is unenforceable due to Federal regs. See:

That being said, you should always avoid mounting anything on your roof shingles if at all possible.

Best to put it on a short post in the yard for all the reasons listed. It can be hidden behind bushes and still get great reception. Think about it...how far away are those satellites, does anybody think if you are 10 feet closer to the sat. that that would make a difference.

Direct put ours in on a pole no extra charge. If they are trying to bill you more ask for a supervisor before the installer moves ahead. I don't think they want to vilolate our rules.

Keep in mind that where they put the dish is also a function of being able to "see" the satellite - some spots just don't work because houses and trees are in the way.
