Exact size filters for AC

I just came back from Home Depot and I saw that they have a large display of the air filters that are used in many of the newer homes south of 466a. 19 1/8 x 19 13/16 x4 5/16. I think they were 28.00 each. If you have a military discount it's 10 % less. When I bought my home the builders superintendent and Sun Cool both told me I must use the exact size filter to properly filter the air.

Check out Ace Hardware in Wildwood. We buy our filters there for about half of what you paid at HD. Very friendly and helpful staff.

And don't forget to search online. Prices are frequently the cheapest there.

I purchased replacement AC filters from:
DiscountFilters.com | Water Filters | Air Filters | Home Filters

Shipping was very fast and I would not hesitate to purchase again. I think they came in a 6-pack for added discounts. Just pull out your current filter and get the exact measurements and any other info you may need to get the right replacement.

Have you tried Wally World (Wal-Mart) either on 466 or 27/441? They seem to be the most reasonably priced for the 3M brand.

Remember , if you see the measurements I posted ,these filters are an ODD size. You can buy filters close to the measurements I gave but the won't fit the way they should. I also said most of the new homes south of 466a. Too small a filter will not fit correctly .These filters last 6 months or more. One other thing, your ac system costs upward of 10 k , get it serviced at least once a year and change your filters.

I couldn't find A/C filters of the exact type required for my system anywhere within 15 miles of TV. An exact fit to manufacturer specifications is what keeps the unit working at its best. I ended up buying the exact filters I needed online, and I bought 6.

Wal-Mart (last time I checked) does not carry the larger size needed by the majority of new Carrier units installed south of 466 since 2009. Online they are about $25-$35 for exact size depending on the grade. Until recently HD did not stock them either. I have asked the manager about 5 times whey they don't and he indicated that he'd look into it. I guess he did:)

I'll check out Ace as mentioned but last time I checked they didn't carry the proper size ( 19 1/8 x 19 13/16 x 4 5/16) for $15 as stated. But I'll check.

how would you know if a merv 11 would overload your air handler?

AC must be made in China or India, etc with metric sizes.

Saves builder bucks but end users pay thru the nose for replacement filters for years.

I buy filters online from Air Filters Delivered

tuccillo 06-24-2014 07:38 AM

You can ask your HVAC contractor. If you have a newer Carrier system that specifies either the FILXXFNC0021 (MERV 8) or FILXXFNC0121 (MERV 11) filters then you can probably use the MERV11 filter but you should ask. Keep in mind that the job of these filters is to keep the evaporator coil clean and not to improve indoor air quality. If you are unhappy with your indoor air quality you may need to take additional steps.

Yes,this is how we order ours. Seems so odd to me that the a/c units installed by the builders have filters that cannot be purchased at a local store.
