Unpaid Speed Cops

At CDD meetings held this week, all of the District Boards of Supervisors of the four districts north of CR 466 approved the purchase of "speed minder" units. These units are the trailer-mounted units we've all seen that tell you how fast you're driving. The Boards or district staffs will decide where the new units will be placed or moved around. The point was made that the units will be placed on both roadways as well as cart paths.

What's interesting is what else the speed minders do in addition to showing your speed as you approach. The units have on-board computers that keep track of how many vehicles pass and at what speed. That data will be reported and used by the local sheriff's offices to determine what locations are experiencing the biggest speeding problem and where they should most effectively place their human officers to catch and ticket the most speeders.

Ahhh, aren't computers wonderful! A $2,500 speed minder unit is a whole lot cheaper than having a paid deputy in an expensive police car patrol a location that maybe isn't the most fruitful for the issuance of tickets and control of speeding. Remember, the Boards of Supervisors in those district north of CR 466 are all Villages residents--no big, bad developer or local Barney Fife doing this stuff. It's just neighbors concerned about people driving their cars and golf carts too fast. And those golf cart speed limits--watch out folks, when you see a speed minder unit while driving your souped up cart, you can be sure that a real live deputy won't be far away.

The three CDD's south of CR 466 have not yet approved the purchase of speed minders for their districts. But that certainly can't be too far in the future.

I have seen a speed minder unit in several locations (probably the same one) south of 466.

I'm almost positive that one is owned by the county. See it fairly often on Buena Vista.

The good part about speed cops instead of the speed minders is they can give y'all a ticket!!!

I would rather see more of them giving more tickets to make money to hire more cops to give more tickets, etc. etc.

And before long people will slow down.

Proof. Observe the school zone with no cop present VS those with cops.....you got it....everybody slows down......get more cops on the job!!

BTK ;D

I think that a full time deputy on Buena Vista North would pay for his car, and his wages just by the speeding fines from tickets he issues.
