Neuro-Opthamologist
 

My wife has an eye issue and has been told by her physician that she likely needs to see a neuro-opthamologist. Has anybody had any experience with one, either in TV or in any of the nearby areas?

If you can't find one locally, Dr Bhatti at Duke is superb. It took him less than 5 minutes to diagnose a problem my wife had after 20 plus years of other ophthalmologists being puzzled... My guess is that you will have to go to at least Orlando and probably further.

We were unimpressed at Ocala Eye and (after 3 visits) have switched.

I've done a quick search and all I see is his affiliation with Duke in NC. Do you have reason to believe he might be available in other areas, such as FL?

Check out Shands in Gainesville, it's affiliated with U of Florida Medical School. They have doctors who have these special specialities. I went there to see a nueroTologist who after several tests, examination and history quickly made a diagnosis of a fairly rare syndrome that involves nerves and ears. I'm on the way to recovery.

Ahh. Wasn't sure why you mentioned Orlando.

Orlando is a large enough city that they *may* have an neuro opthamologist floating around. Shands may also have one (tho you should not assume that medical schools automatically have one of every subspecialty).

If you go to a top tier med school, they probably will. Duke has 3 n/os. I'm sure that Hopkins, Harvard, and Columbia do. UF and USF? Don't know. Much less likely as they are down quite a ways in the ratings and (more importantly) in the endowments that help pay for the top specialists.

Getting one for The Villages? Probably right after we build our heart transplant center...

Since her physician recommended a physician of that particular specialty, I would ask him/her who they would recommend. I have never heard of that particular specialty, but that doesn't account for much.

I was advised by a neurologist once that I needed to see a neurosurgeon and I asked him who he would go to if he needed the same procedure that I needed. He gave me a name and I saw him and everything worked out just fine.
