Sinkhole question
 

Can anyone address this issue? ....Thinking about moving to THE ViLLAGES; however, a know-it-all friend advised me that the whole region is plagued by sinkholes. Does anyone ever worry about their homes and safety in the Villages? Have there been any incidents? -Have there been geological studies prior to building down there? -Or does money rule at the expense of lives and property where building and property development is concerned in Fl? Saw a youtube video where a man was sucked into and under his bedroom floor when a sinkhole collapsed, he was never recovered.

Yes and we all have STD's and there are a million women to each man and we drink and party all night. Yes, we have sinkholes - the whole country has sinkholes. Risk is
minimal, but it happens. Have to judge your own tolerance for risk. Some people won't live where you can be hit by a hurricane.

Just read an article about a 50 ft sinkhole between two homes in The Villages. One can prepare for a hurricane or a tornado. But sinkholes are insidious and sudden! You could be sound asleep and sucked into the bowels of hell before you could get your bearings. I'm not scared of a whole heckuva lot in this world, but I would very much resent going underground prematurely --unless there were a funeral first!

If you use the Search button on the panel above, you will find a lot of previous threads about sinkholes.
Most of us don't spend a lot of time worrying about them.

After you spend hours reading the sinkhole threads, then go next to the sinkhole insurance threads. Florida is the only state that has natural disasters that often times cannot be insured.

Actually, if you do some serious research, Florida is not the sink hole capital of the US, that honor resides in a northern state. I came from PA, aka we had the 'reading prong" which meant RADON, and the development I was in had 6 sinkholes in 15 years. These can occur almost anywhere, so as stated before, this goes to your level of tolerance. BTW, there were 2 less than 300 yards from my current TV house. I do not worry about it.

It is like Russian Roulette living here in the Villages! One house every day will just disappear and leave a big hole in the earth.

I'd be more worried about the gators I see on the golf courses than about sinkholes.
And don't get me started on the roundabouts.

An unseen sinkhole growing beneath my purchased home would concern me much greater than a roaming gator. ...Do property owners bear the cost of filling in sinkholes on their property?

All of Florida is sink hole country

There are more roaming gators than sinkholes. :icon_twisted:

Even if you have sinkhole insurance, there may be a huge deductible.
As Janmcn said .. There are previous threads discussing insurance.

It should not be scary to a Naval Officer, your submarine has a better chance of sinking than your house being sunk by a sinkhole.

mach1 - Your posts make it sound like The Villages and Florida should not be in your retirement consideration. Why not try something in Arizona - great climate and retiree tax advantages.

Of course over 100,000 folks don't seem to be overly concerned about sinkholes in The Villages, so that could say something about moving there after all.
