Lighting strike in calumet grove

A recent lighting strike in Calumet Grove has me concerned. the green cable tower in my neighbors yard was hit and she has lost numerous items such as TV, modem, computer, cable boxes, garage door opener, hot water heater and more.

My neighbor on the other side lost her air conditioner and computer.

One of my neighbors has had a surge protector installed on her panel to minimize future losses.

I would be interested in hearing what others have done to minimize losses.

Thank you.

Seco's surge protector will help protect items plugged into your electrical system. a hit to the cable/telephone system will most likely get through and do some damage.

What is advised is that you buy or rent a whole house surge protector from Seco and also put individual surge protectors on ALL of your appliances and televisions, computers, etc.

You can further get lightning rods but only buy them from people who are legitimate. You can send a pm to a guy who calls himself Lightning on this forum and ask him how you can ascertain that. He doesn't own a business that installs them, he and another man just go around to different clubs and organizations and tell people about the different kinds of lightening strikes and how you can best protect your home.

And Bogie? Praying wouldn't hurt. ;)

Nine homes have been completely destroyed due to direct lightning strikes here in The Villages in the last eight years.

We just had A-1 Lightning Protection provide us with protection. Owner Jeff Lewis is good to talk to and his team does a fine job.

We recently had a strike hit our tree which in turn sent a surge through the cable lines. Our whole house surge protector took care of AC and appliances but we only had the cheap power strips some people think are surge protectors on our electronics. We lost a lot. We now had Seco also put whole house one outside and all our TV and computers are on very good true surge protectors. To help in the future, the ones we bought for the TV have places on them to directly attach you cable lines to the surge protector they also have jacks for the phone lines. We had lightning rods installed years ago, so now I think we're as covered as we can be but always remember lightning has a mind of it's own and is very unpredictable nothing is full proof. Also as I stated before in a previous post AAA Ins covered everything for us very pleased with them. In less than 2 weeks we replaced everything and had checks from them.
