Windows 7 will not start up
 

I think the machine has crashed.
When turning it on it goes to the Windows logo stating windows starting up.
Then it goes to a black screen giving me choices to
start normally (which it will not do) or
launch system repair....which leads to choices that are not listed (?) in a restore window.
I have tried to get help online but the jargon and level of expertise required is above my pay grade (substantially).

I am trying to get a fix (hopefully) before resorting to having to pay an expert to determine if it is fixable.

Comments/suggestions.

When you get the window with the start up choices, see if there is a 'reboot in SAFE MODE' if so select this option. This will typically repair a defective driver or other program that is causing problems with a normal start. If windows starts, that go to the start menu, and select reboot. The computer should come up to the same screen, and this time select to boot normally. If all is well you have fixed the problem. If this does not work, you will need much more detailed help.

Do a search on TOTV for computer problems, as saw previous suggestions as well as one of the local stores that had a free service.

Computers now are commodity items. For the cost of 2 months of your TV service that you rent, you can buy a new one. No hassles trying to fix the old one. Anything of importance should have been stored on a cloud based server or a backup hard drive or both. Less headaches and more time to golf.

I have a desktop at home which had the same problem, would turn on then went into snooze mode. Searched on the internet and found that the battery in the memory fails, replaced it and like a miricle it woke up and I was allowed to login. Hope this helps

what happens when you select to start in normal mode? Does it just immediately shut off, or does it try and do some things first?

I pressed the start key on my laptop and it would do nothing. Took it to MMD and they said the motherboard was shot. $400 for a new motherboard. I bought a new ACER with Windows 7 for $499 from Walmart.com because I did not want to mess with Windows 8.

To the OP, this sounds like a virus. Your hardware is likely fine. Hit F8 repeatedly when you start the computer to get to the safe mode menu. Choose Safe Mode with Networking. Once in, DL a good antivirus program and run it.

my computer would not go to safe mode. It would always ask to start normally or repair. In normal it would also revert to giving a choice of repair. I could not get it to do the repair because the first window needs to show an operating system which mine did not show.

I eventually got a set of drivers from my grandson who is a computer scientist that would enable the correct operating system for the repair. That did the trick, the repair window then showed Windows 7. However upon hitting next a screen came up stating there was no recognizeable hard drive (????). And to try to restore from a remote hard drive. Fortunately I did have by back up hard drive that had a complete back up of my computer. Plugged it in...hit next and within an hour or so I had a completely operational computer again.

Lessons to be learned: If you do not have restore discs made for your computer do it today. If you do not have a remote back up of your computer do it today.
