I really hate lightning
Think I've found the one thing I truly hate about TV -- the lightning storms. Oddly, the tornado watches and warnings don't really phase me. Probably will if I see one but not until then. However, every time there's a lightning flash, I'm ready to crawl under the bed. I'd take a mattress into the closet and put it on top of me but I'm too afraid the lightning will start a fire and I'd be trapped.
I don't mind the torrential downpours. They're an inconvenience. I don't like the wind but California's winds were worse. But I really, really hate the lightning. I'm ready to be rescued! |
Re: I really hate lightning
Red - Do you have a lanai or covered porch to sit on?
Seems like that is one of the things that I'd enjoy. |
Re: I really hate lightning
Yes, I do but I'm too scared to even consider sitting out there and watching it. Did I mention that I really hate lightning? I mean really, really. Not kinda, not sorta, but completely and totally. And I don't care that the angels are getting strikes, either!

Re: I really hate lightning
I always count the seconds between lightening flashes and thunder. I agree with Russ that watching a storm on the lanai is pure pleasure. Lightening is usually many miles away.
On the other hand, if there are no seconds between lightening and thunder, then I agree that hiding under the bed is your best option!! |
Re: I really hate lightning
Red, Phil Rizzuto famous shortstop for the NY Yankees was scared to death of lightning. Story goes he was buzzed in the field on the button on top of his cap. Since then he began putting his chewing gum over the button to avoid shock and it caught on. I guess thats here nor there, but if it began to lightning while he was in the booth calling a game, he would just get up and leave. Funny but true. Johnny
Rizzuto was also very phobic about lightning, and sometimes left the booth following violent thunderclaps. (Quote: Wikipedia) |
Re: I really hate lightning
I love watching the storms here, especially from the lanai. But it is only second best to being at sea during a lightening storm, you can watch it for hours as it approaches and it is really spectacular.

Re: I really hate lightning
I like lightening storms. I find them fascinating, the single lightening strikes and sheet lightening are beautiful.
Where we live in upstate NY I love to hear the thunder rumble. We live at the foot of the Gunks and the thunder sounds like an echo. The lightening is like a light show on the mountains. The thunder, the sound effects. Hyacinth Bucket |
Re: I really hate lightning
I have heard that Florida is known as "The Lightning Capital" of the country/North America/ the world - various versions. I think Tampa Bay is the real biggie.
I would love to trade somebody in TV right now. We have a blizzard warning and a possible 15 inches of snow on the way. They keep uppin' the ante. To make matters worse, I knew it was on its way and for some insane reason, I made sure that we would be stranded with only food that is good for us. We have lots of fruit and vegetables, some fish, plenty of whole grains... WHAT IN THE :edit: WAS I THINKIN'?! It is going to be a long weekend. At least we get to skip one hour of it. |
Re: I really hate lightning
I love the lightening storms too. We love to sit and watch them pass by. We get lots of them here in ARK except today we are getting snow and a lot of it for us. It has been snowing all day and we might actually get 4-6 inches. I would rather be sitting in TV watching a lightening storm.

Re: I really hate lightning
Heck, I'd take a blizzard over lightning. No way, no how am I going out in either, anyway. But I do agree that at sea a lightning storm is truly beautiful -- as long as it's a long way away from me. In the meantime, you guys enjoy your lightning shows and I'll cower in my bed wishing I could crawl under it.

Re: I really hate lightning
Beady,
You are a brave brave lady. Being at sea in a lightening storm would scare the begeebers out of me. Just the thought of it is really terrifying. :yikes: |
Re: I really hate lightning
I agree with some of the others. I love to sit on the lanai during a storm. The other day I just relaxed and read a book as it poured around me. I've always loved the rain. I'm not a snow person at all though and that's one of the things I don't miss about Illinois.

Re: I really hate lightning
Nature is beautiful (talk about your insightful comments :hot:). To me here is nothing more enthralling than viewing the vagaries of weather from a protected location. I adore a heavy snow storm from the warmth and safety of my upper level picture window. Put me in a car on the interstate or outside shoveling and I hate it. But snow covers imperfections and makes everyone more equal. The BMW or Mercedes gets covered with drifts just as fast as the 8 year old bucket of bolts and you both have to dig them out the next morning the same way. Rainstorms are the absolute best cure for the blahs and/or insomnia. The heavy rain seems to sweep away all your petty problems and leave the world a little cleaner and better place. The occasional thunder and lightening just remind you of the power of nature, the relative weakness of man, and make you remember that in the overall scope of life, whatever mistakes you might have made or troubles you might have just aren't that important.
My perfect views would be the house high above the New England coast where I could watch the wild nor'easter batter the shore, the mountain home where I could watch the valley before me fill with winter snow, isolating everyone but allowing nature's creatures to move in their daily lives, or even the home on the Kansas prairie where I could view the dynamic tornado (from a safe distance, of course) as it cut it's path as only it determined, oblivious to the plans of man. But then I'd want to come back to Liberty Park. |
Re: I really hate lightning
Was wondering where the Village of Liberty Park was and came across this web-site again. http://www.virginiatrace.com/ Has a lot of really good links for Villagers.
Back to the topic, I really love lightning storms as long as I am inside somewhere and not driving and worse walking around in it. Take lighting storms over the sandstorms I experienced around Phoenix any old day. |
Re: I really hate lightning
Tal, what a great site to get info on TV. Virginia Trace webmaster did a great job. By the way I hate lightning storms and can't imagine sitting on the lanai and watching it. I can see Mr. Scottke doing it.
