In answer to Mom2five

The following picture was taken from the third story balcony of Saint
Stanislaus
College located next door to Our Lady of the Gulf church in Bay Saint
Louis,
Mississippi on the morning of August 29th, 2005.

This is believed to be the initial tidal wave from Hurricane Katrina.
The tidal wave
was approximately 35 to 40 feet high. When it slammed into the beach
front
communities of Bay Saint Louis and Waveland Mississippi to completely
destroy
99% of every structure along the beach for 9 miles and over a mile
inland.

The destruction only started there. The flooding that continued
inland destroyed
the contents of all but 35 homes in these two communities of
approximately
14,000 people.

My daughter's mother in law lives three blocks from the beach in Bay St Louis. She rode out the storm in her attic. Her house is built about 4 ft off the ground and the storm surge was 5 ft high inside her house. We have pics of her house showing the water line in the house and one she took from the attic during the storm showing her next door neighbor's house with water about 3 feet from the roof gutters.

The first pic is accurate but the rest are Nebraska and Kansas storms. Great pics!

Wow chuckinca...I can't even begin to imagine how horrifying an experience that must had been for her! Hope everything is going good for her now. For many, things are still not straightened out and returning to their community continues to be a dream.

Great pics but they have been around the Internet for quite some time and don't relate to Katrina. For the origin of the pics check out: http://www.snopes.com/photos/natural/storm.asp

The first one is true. The actual story here: http://www.snopes.com/katrina/photos/surge.asp
