Banned dog breeds?
Hello All,
I was curious if The Villages banned any dog breeds? I tried multiple searches on TOTV on the topic, but did not find an answer. Does anyone know if such a ban exists and if so, what breeds are on the list? Would the list include "All American" dogs which might be a mix that includes the identified breeds? Thanks much! I don't know for a fact, but I would be shocked if any breeds are banned.

I've seen American Pitbulls, Dobies, German Shepherds, Rotties, a couple of Mastiffs (including one Neapolitan) plus almost every other breed that I know of (and I know a lot of breeds lol) here. So, doubt there is any banned list either in TV itself or the Tri Counties. You might want to check Sumter, Marion and Lake Counties to see if they have any breeds on their banned lists, but I doubt it.

I don't know if The Villages bans any breeds, but I know insurance companies do.

I don't think the private dog park (DDRR) bans any type of dogs. Tal would know that for sure. But I do think they watch the more "controversial" breeds closely for any signs of aggression. |
No breeds are banned.
They would have to disclose that information before you buy. |
I think it would be worth a call to the county in which your Villages home is located. I'd be hesitant to make an important decision based on opinions on this forum.

During our visit I asked the question and was told that no breeds are banned.

It sounds like a few calls to different insurance companies in The Villages might be in order, if having property insurance is important to you. |
Thanks to all for your replies. I am familiar with insurance companies and surcharges on home owners insurance. Some towns here in Michigan have a surcharge for "dangerous" breeds and some are moving towards outright bans based upon breed.
We currently have a 14 year old dalmatian/pointer mix and are looking at dog rescues in case we decide to adopt at some point. As you can guess there are many different dogs looking for homes and we want to adopt the "right dog" regardless of breed, but if there was a ban it would be tough, and we might have had to not adopt what could be a perfect fit dog for us. Note that we have had a doberman in the past and she was an "ambassador" in the neighborhood-well liked by the kids and we never had to worry about her. I would never say a dog won't bite, but if you know your dog, you should know what might upset their "tempo". I also recognize that sometimes adoptions don't work as I think it was BoSox? (sorry if the screen name is incorrect) who unfortunately had to return an adopted dog. We thoroughly "vett" any dog we are looking to adopt before finalizing the adoption. Our last 4 dogs have all been successful rescues, each with their own personality and ability to bring joy to our lives. Thanks again for your time to post your replies! |

Villages residents that I've met at DDRR, the private dog park, frequently adopt from Shelters. It's really heart warming to hear the success stories. |
