Edible mushrooms?
5 Attachment(s)
There are hundreds/thousands of mushrooms growing in the rights-of-way in The Villages. They come up wild and usually in an arc pattern.
Are these mushrooms edible? See pictures I cannot convince my wife to eat them! |
Yes they are I went foraging with mushrooms with my father for years. The only problem here is the grass everywhere is sprayed with insecticides, etc. I would not dare pick one
|
No. The county agricultural people said these mushrooms are poisonous. So please quit trying to get your wife to eat them.
|
I read an article last year about mushrooms and they said unless you're an expert DON'T even think about eating any. So many are poison.
|
Eating? No answer....your arc pattern....if you notice a complete circle.... Common characteristic
PLEASE take a pic to send me... Also where it was taken..maybe I can go there to tale my own pic..... Thank you in advance... |
It is kind of a trial and error thing.

my grandfather used to pick wild mushrooms often. My grandmother when cooking/frying them always put a silver dollar in the bottom of the pan. If it stayed shiny the shrooms were good to eat. If it turned black or brown they got thrown out.
I am not offering this as a way to tell if they are or not. Just sharing a memory from way, way, WAY back in time. |
My mom called the mushrooms growing in a circle fairy rings.

They look like poisonous toad stoles to me!
I from the midwest and as kid picked many morel's for extra income (in 60's 5 bucks pound was easy money for kid that was in the outdoors anyway), yes morel's has poisonous look-alike as Cfrance pointed out. Once you've seen and picked morels you can tell the differents real easy. As for the toad stole looking mushrooms I would touch them with 10 foot pole. So, I would NEVER pick wild mushroom in the deep south. WHY I'm not from the area. If you like toad stole looking mushroom I would just buy them out of the store. I don't care for them cause once you tasted wild fresh morels the store buttom mushrooms don't have much taste. |
