Chicken bones on construction sites

When we first arrived in TV, our entire area was under construction. When I walked the dog, I walked with my eyes on the ground because so many chicken bones were thrown about from the workers who just chuck them instead of putting them back in the bag and taking them with them.

Yesterday, when walking the dog past a house that was having a T&D patio and screen enclosure done down the street, voila...he grabbed a chicken bone and I couldn't get it out of his throat before he swallowed it. I found another one he did not get but it only takes one. I have been watching the dog diligently and hope he passes it.

I have called T&D to remind them that lots of people walk their dogs so their people shouldn't drop their food trash especially bones at sites. I thought I would post here to remind everyone when walking past any construction site, there may be something to eat. It isn't just at the big construction sites.

Great reminder. Thank you.

Thanks for pointing this out! I would discourage anyone from walking their pups on construction sites. Our 4 month old Cairn terrier swallowed a wing nut with screw attached that he apparently found on a construction site and had to have surgical removal. A costly and painful mistake!

Wow. That must have been scary. Did you see him grab it? How did you realize he had actually eaten a wing nut with a screw. Xray?

I am forever playing "chicken bone tug of war" with my schnauzer who has found too many to count. I bring a treat on walks now so I am ready to make a trade for a chicken bone, rib bone, or whatever else the workers drop. Yesterday he ate a ketchup packet!
Generally, if the bone goes down, the dog's stomach acids will eat it up. If he gags a lot and doesn't stop, then it may be stuck, but I think that is rare if they have a chance to chew it.

Thanks Karennn for the info...This happened once before when there was ALL the construction and I was panicked. This time, I wasn't as concerned because he did pass it. That said, I spent the night up with him as he was panting endlessly and drinking tons of water. And, consequently of course, peeing and pooping which is always a good sign. Fed him a bunch of rice. Hopefully by end today, he will be a happy fellow again.

You would probably have nightmares if you knew what was buried around your house.

Sorry, but I don't mean gold, or anything good!

Good reminder, thanks.

There was construction going on all around me when I moved to the villages.
At least there was somewhere to walk the dog.
Yes there was debris of every sort left there, cans, nails, bottles, food.

I noticed that sometimes there was a dumpster on the site and sometimes there wasn't. I am no more careful with my dog when there is stuff like that around than when there isn't.
Basically, I'm saying that I'm always aware of what she's walking over and what's around her.

I respect the workmen and the hard hot work they do, and Until the house and lot are done, other homeowners and pets enter the property at their own risk. I can't see construction workers tossing construction debris into a pile and being all tidy about a chicken bone.

Maybe you were walking in a chicken graveyard...

Are you kidding? I believe at the very least littering is actually illegal..at least in Florida it is.

Respecting the work they do has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with being a lazy, disrespectful, litterbug. If someone arrives at a location to work, they arrive with their food in a bag. No one walks around with a bunch of chicken wings in their hands or pockets. It really isn't a stretch to put the chicken bones back in the bag and take it with them. It is NOT the homeowners responsibility to pick up after the workmen. I can tell you the owner who has been living there quite peacefully for a year, was smoking angry because he has two small dogs that would surely have scooped up those bones in a split second had mine on his walk around the circle not done so first.
