Cinco de Mayo

Greetings to all of my new part time neighbors! My husband and I are new owners and sadly only part time Villagers.. I am curious about the Cinco de Mayo celebration. We live 3 hours away most of the time, and miss all of the good stuff! We were able to be there for the tree lighting in December, and that was the greatest thing I have ever seen! So, what I'd like to ask, is the celebration worth my driving 3 hours to be a part off? Thanks!

Pam

Re: Cinco de Mayo

Pam,

We went last year...it was fun, but, not one of the top 5 events of the year. There is music, mariachi bands, stilt walkers, some food but not a big production/parade like St Patty's Day or Mardi Gras. Just another big party!!!

It's on a Monday, so, if you were gonna be here for the weekend, might be worth extending for a day, but, not a special day trip just for this.

Just my opinon.

Re: Cinco de Mayo

The real story.....

Most people don’t know that back in 1912, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise was manufactured in England.

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York.

This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.

But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. It hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost.

The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were devastated at the loss.

Their anguish was so great that they declared a National Day of Mourning which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as...

Sinko de Mayo.

that was hilarious blueeagle..thanks for that informative history lesson!

Hi Patti! I can't wait to meet all of our new neighbors. We are only there about one weekend a month, but we'll be there for a week in June, so maybe we can find one another then! I am jealous that you get to be there so soon! But happy for you too! Be safe moving!

Hi Pam,

I will keep an eye out for you in June. Right now we have been traveling back and forth to Orlando every week, but we are glad that it is coming to an end. We are on Everwood Court, hopefully we will get a chance to meet.

blueeagle, I also agree, that was a funny story! ;D
