Help!!! Cat/ kitten crying distressed in sewer!!!
 

I pulled up after work tonight in the Village of Santiago there are a couple of "sewer" feral cats. One of them is a kitten we were going to trap/fix and keep. A single cat is "crying"/yelping out from the sewer tonight as though stuck and or/injured. Does anybody know how I can get help to get it out????THANKS....Please call or text me at 732-513-6747...Maureen...

I have seen the fire depart rescue other animals, call Community Watch.

And please let us know if you get them out.

You might be able wrap a board with towels and lower it down depending on how far down it is.

Or take a beach towel or two towels tied together and lower it down. Bring it up slowly. Maybe the cat will cling to it using its claws and you can pull it up. Wear gloves, though, if they're feral.

I believe you can use an old strip of carpet and a 2x4 and set it in the drain so it can climb out. Someone posted this or something like this in an earlier thread regarding cats in sewers.

I have seen many feral cats jump in and out of the sewer drains. The sad part is when they are no longer able to manage the "out" part.

I have said before...I wish they would put grates over the big hole in the back of the drains. I had to teach my dog not to sniff around the drains because I can just imagine him sliding right in.

It was a barking frog. Sounds just like a dog but never any whimpers or whines, just barks. This sounds different, which was why I didn't post. I do know when I first thought it was a dog in the sewer I called 9-1-1. I was told the fire department would get to me as soon as they dealt with some other issues. Fortunately, found out it was a frog before they arrived and cancelled the call.

The board with a towel wrapped around it sounds like a good idea. That should make it pretty easy for a cat to climb up and it will probably do just that when it thinks no one is around.

Thank You all for your concern. I got a very helpful text last night and ended up talking to my neighbor whose house resides in front of the sewer. He has seen the non-neutered male around and believes it was mating.....The ferals both came up from the sewer for breakfast this morning.....I called the Sumter County Fire Department last night and 3 trucks came out after 11PM and we all heard the cat but they could not do anything. We are proceeding with attaining traps and getting them fixed.....we are going to keep the kitten once we catch it.

Gosh, I thought I would have a welcome break from feral, stray cats once I left the land of 3rd world countries (Beirut, Pakistan, South Sudan) where I have fed Embassy stray cats for years. But it looks like the problem will continue in my own permanent back yard. How depressing.

I also have a trap you can borrow (big cat) but I sent you a pm about the kitten problem. We got a kitten out of the sewer last year by using a rat trap and attaching a string and lowering it into the sewer. Unfortunately this only works for kittens due to the opening size of the grate. I agree, they should close the back openings so animals can't get into the sewers.
