I am curious what you consider an upscale fire and smoke alarms. The ones supplied in our house work quite well (especially if some grease spills in the over), are all wired together so they all sound off, and have battery backup. The only thing I see missing is no alarm in the garage or attic, and I am planning on having both of those added.
If you are looking for ionization type alarms, it is my understanding that you can buy this type alarm and replace the existing alarms using the existing wiring. The last alarm I purchased actually had 2 or 3 adapters to mate with existing wiring connectors.
I hope this helps. Also, there is an alarm salesman that is regularly on the forums, and I am sure he will have some suggestions.
