What is this palm tree's problem?

This photo was sent to me by Sumter Extension Agent, Jim Davis, who trained me as a master gardener.
He asked me if I knew what was wrong with this tree. I guessed a woodpecker had made holes. He said the holes are too big for that. anybody else want to guess? |
How old is it? It could be Acne.

Beetles?? Although I've never seen it in live trees, just my chickee hut poles. Although, they're kinda big for that, too.
|
If this was in SoCal, I'd say a beetle but I don't think we have them here. Could be some kind of larvae, but I guess I'll go with butt rot.

Is it in Collier? Did it just happen this morning at 6:15? There's a couple of brain teasers posted this morning.

Weevil larvaes?
|
Golf ball dings... I have seen that on many trees dangerously close to tee boxes.
|
I'm sure the sound of....
a Chainsaw will cure the problem!
|
You guys are good!
The agent's clue was " it is near a t box! He calls it "golf ball blight"! |
Have you tried Palmolive soap?

Aha! |
Those are some serious depressions!
I would have never guessed that a golf ball could make those. Strong swings out there. Bet the golfers who inflicted those wish their aim was straight down the fairway, they would have gotten some good distance!! LOL! |
I have a neighbor that put tape around his palm because the sprinkler was putting a hole in the bark. Not too pretty.
