Can He Do This and How Does He Do It?

My buddy wants to record some TV shows to DVDs so he and his wife can play the DVDs in a laptop. This way they could watch the shows wherever they wanted to. They have the Directv Genie, but don't know how to transfer a few of the shows onto discs. They said it is hard to get to the back of the Genie box to hook anything up. Is there a way to download TV shows from the Internet? I think I recall something called Hulu, but have no idea how that works. Do you pay for it? Do you need special programs or equipment to use it? How do you hook up to it? Any suggestions welcome. Try to explain in simple terms because none of us are very tech savy.

Have to admit that I went to the Hulu site and I don't know any more than I did before. If anyone has used this, could use some info.

Also, if there are other things that would work. Looking for all suggestions. Thanks.
