Mince, minced, not mincemeat pie

I have searched The Villages for a mince pie and have come up empty handed. My friends said bake one I said no way. Faced with no other choice I decided to bake one. I searched The Villages for caned pie filling I came up empty handed. I went to the net and found I could have filling delivered to my local Walmart. I clicked on the Walmart item and it said not available within 50 miles of you. I checked the paper phonebook for the TV looking for "Bakery", not one bakery in the phonebook. My last resort, I am going to call 911.

I just saw some "mincemeat" pie filling at the store. It may have been Publix or maybe Walmart, but I remember noticing the box of the Nonesuch brand that Mom always used. I have used the box version before also...just add water as I recall.

I suspect that this is the variety of mince that you refer to, I have never seen a storebought variety that actually contains meat

Your first decision not to bake was the best.

Only buy mincemeat in glass jars ............... and if you are feeling really adventurous, mix several spoonfuls of brandy into the mincemeat in the jar. Buy your pie crusts and voila you have a perfect mince pie for your holiday celebrations. I like mine warm and floating in heavy cream.

Where are the Brits - they could really tell you how it is done! Maybe Brit parrot head will show up.

Maybe if Walmart does not pan out, try English Tea Store - finest teas, teapots, and gift baskets under British foods or use their search engine. I just saw it listed as 'in stock' 14oz for 4.49 (glass jar.)

They ship out of Pennsylvania and I have been buying teas and scone mixes and clotted cream from them. Prompt, good company IMO.

Good luck.

My hubby loves mince pie. It is a holiday tradition for him.

Last year we found pies (Thanksgiving & Christmastime only) at Winn-Dixie, this year we found them at Publix as well.

Publix and Walmart carry the jars of filling.
I have baked them, but don't have a clue what a good one should taste like.
They don't hold appeal for me.

My hubby is happy with the bakery pies- so I'm content with that.

I have found Cross and Blackwell mincemeat far superior to S&W's. C&B also have a rum and brandy mincemeat. Yummmmm!!!

Fresh Market and Publix both had mincemeat pie filling last year.

Mincemeat pies are an English tradition, the mincemeat should always be purchased in jars and can be either baked as one large pie with shortcrust pastry or as individual mini pies, we served ours with either whipped heavy cream or a very decadent rum butter.

I just bought a 27 ounce jar of None Such Classic Original Mincemeat at the Walmart on 466, bottom shelf, next to the Jello. I'll add my own rum or brandy flavor, thank you.

This post makes me feel nostalgic for Christmas at my grandmother's house. My dad LOVED mincemeat pie....Grandma would always make him one at Christmas.....he was always so happy!

cquick 12-12-2014 12:55 PM

oh, and Grandma McCord's recipe actually included suet and beef.

Ecuadog 12-12-2014 01:13 PM

None Such Classic Original Mincemeat has a small amount of BEEF in its ingredients list.
