Be vigilant when buying something by weight

Last week at Fresh Market, I bought some Surry Sausage. The sign in the display cooler said $6.99 a pound. When they weighed it, the sticker price was $8.99 per pound.

Today, I bought some sliced turkey breast from the deli. The sign in the display case said $6.49 a pound. When they rang it up, it was $6.99 a pound.

On both occasions, I caught the error and in each case, they had to find another item at the same price and use its sku. When I got to the checkout today, the lady said, "This isn't buffalo wings." I had to spend the next minute explaining what had happened.

I hate it when I have to do my job better than they do.

I too have had this problem but only with Fresh market. First time I bought fresh green beans for what I thought was $1.99 per pound. I thought my bill seemed high but I had bought other things so didn't check until I got home. They had charged me $11.99 per pound for "haricot verts" (green beans in French). I went back to the store and asked for a refund (took the beans with me). The cashier ridiculed the cashier who had rung my purchase up. The real joke was that SHE had been the one who rang me up.

Anyway, I decided a few months later to try them again. I had been told that Fresh Market had the best Italian sausage. At the store I asked for 2 lbs. at $2.99 per lb. I got home and realized the package was stamped "Pork Chops $4.99 per lb"). When I went back, I asked to see the manager. I told him my story and mentioned the first experience and he wanted to refund the entire amount I had paid for my order. I insisted that he not do that because I wasn't coming back.

Fast forward to the holiday season. We were out and near Fresh Market when I remembered that I needed tortilla chips for a dish that I was taking to a party the next day so we stopped at Fresh Market. I ran in and grabbed a bag of FM (Fresh Market) tortilla chips that were on an end cap near the registers. When I opened the bag the next day, there was a rancid smell from the bag. My husband broke a chip and we each took a bite. It WAS rancid and it took the remainder of the day to get the bad taste out of our mouths. The chips had a "use by" date of 3 months earlier. I returned them, got a refund and went home and sent an email to FM headquarters. I got a glowing email form them......."this is not how we do business, we strive to have the freshest food, the manager from the store will call you, blah blah, blah". No one ever called and I have never returned

I've learned my lesson but it's disturbing to hear that others are having the same problems from the same store. How many do not check their receipts who are over charged?

Had an issue last year when I was still living the TV with Fresh Market - can't remember the specifics, but I can tell you corporate handled it very well and was just as pleased by the manager of the local store when I returned for my refund. They are a specialty store and I would only shop there when I was looking for something special so my experience has been limited.

I shop at Fresh market frequently and I have never had a problem. Last Saturday I purchased cold cuts in the Publix at Colony and was overcharged. I bought American cheese at 6.99 and was charged for muenster at 8.99 a lb. A mistake can happen anywhere. I will continue shopping at Fresh Market and Publix.

Data entry errors. Happens everywhere. I once was charged $11 for a six pack of ginger ale. Must be vigilant.

Go to Walmart instead. Oh wait... be sure the cashier doesn't add cash back onto your bill and pocket it. That's the current scam going on with them. (not necessarily in TV)

How does that work???????

Thanks for the heads up

I agree that in our electronic age this kind of thing can happen anywhere. (As they probably did back when Skip used the pricing gun on the tomato soup.) I have not paid much attention in the past, but will now double check packages as they are handed to me over the deli/meat counter. And elsewhere. Faced with a line of customers, the clerks aren't likely to pick up many errors as they scan through items. Thank you for the heads up.

The cashier enters in your order that you want cash back without telling you. Then the cashier pockets the money. If the customer checks the slip and discovers it, the cashier just pretends the system is making an error. They won't take the cash back off the bill. They'll just give you the money. However, you will be paying interest on that $ from the time it's put on your cc bill. So you must insist they void the entire order and start over if you're using a cc instead of a debit card.

Wow! There always going to be somebody who figures out how to beat the system. That's too bad.

I have never asked for cash back so I will ask a dumb question. Do I understand that if you ask for cash back that all or part of the transaction goes on your credit card as a cash advance? I have only gotten a cash advance on my credit card once and paid it off within an hour so don't know how it works really.

TrudyM, if you are using a credit card instead of a debit card, yes, it will be considered a cash advance, and you will start paying interest on it from the minute it's charged.

My husband once pulled out the cc instead of the debit card to get $ at an atm. They don't even list the interest or charge in with your normal charged items, so I never realized it till I kept seeing us being charged 50 cents interest for a couple of months and called Visa.

I had to overpay the cc bill by the amount he got out plus my estimate of the interest to get it cleared off. He now knows the cc is blue and the dc is beige!
