Package thieves

Here in Washington state we have a real problem here this year with people who follow the UPS and Fed EX and even Post Office trucks and then steal the packages left on the doorstep. A Neighbor gets their meds (as I do) through a mail order pharmacy and they were stolen off his porch. Now medicare D won't authorize more. Have you had this problem in the Villages?

Last year a guy on a bike stole a package off of a porch and a contractor nearby spotted him and chased him. He got a description and photo of the culprit and police later got him under arrest. We watch out for each other.

"Here" is all over, and not just here in TV. People following a UPS truck and then stealing the package which was just delivered, has been happening for years throughout the country. We moved from Vegas and the same thing was happening there every Christmas season.

It really doesn't matter exactly where "here" is. If you are expecting a delivery, be on the lookout for it. If you know you won't be home, leave a note for the delivery person to deliver it to a close neighbor.

Bumping for clarity. Trudy M is talking about Seattle, not The Villages.

Trudy? Could you request your title be changed so that people know what city you are talking about?????

Trudy...glad you clarified that you are in Seattle and not TV. Many mail order meds here come in regular mail and are securely delivered at our postal stations. Other than the one incident mentioned, I have not heard of other problems with fed ex and UPS packages being stolen from homes. With their delivery notification tracking updates, it is much easier for the consumer to be ready for a package. But, good warning, we all need to be vigilant.

We had this happen more than once in Westchester Co. NY. Once it was an expensive power tool and it was hellish to get UPS to do anything about it.
Next day I put a box containing a bag of dog poop on the doorstep and waited for the thief to take it but he/she never did

That was a great idea

No problem for me or Mrs. Trap. She gets hers at Publix and Walmart, I get mine through the post box station and also at Publix.

I never have had prescriptions come by UPS or FedEx.

Wouldn't the same guy that steals packages read the note and know you are not at home? Then break into your house to steal your stuff?
Why not ask the neighbor to watch for the delivery truck?

Watch for the truck all day?
Isn't that pretty presumptuous
especially when you have to go to the bathroom?

All bad guys have to do is knock on any door
to know if someone is at home.
The person who steals packages probably doesn't break into houses.

we buy things almost exclusively from Amazon and get our meds in the mail. The only things that ever wind up on our doorstep anymore are packages that are too big to fit in the mail station boxes.

Barefoot 12-21-2014 08:09 AM

We get a lot of UPS packages left at our front door in The Villages. No problems.
The only incident I've ever heard about was the guy on a bike who was subsequently arrested.

The other night on 20/20 there was a segment on this....police say that starting in October there is an increase of packages being stolen from porches and it increases right through until Christmas. One family happened to have a security camera....the woman took packages and even the wreath from the front door..the homeowner posted the video on social media and someone recognized the woman and the police arrested her.
