Morse above 466
 

It seems pretty clear to me that the developer highly underestimated the amount of traffic that would be on Morse between 466 and 441 when they built it as a 2 lane road with the golf cart traffic riding adjacent to the cars.
It's already difficult to turn left out of the side streets and it's only December.
I don't think there is space to make it a 4 lane road (3 would be nice), but I think it would be more important to move the golf cart lane over away from the cars. It's downright scary driving the cart inches from these cars, especially in light of the car/bicycle accident this past summer.
Does anyone think this might ever happen?

An accident between car and cart? Has happened, will happen again. Widen the road? Or add a cart lane on the grass? Maybe if there are enough accidents and people start suing the developer for street conditions. Until then, nope.

It doesn't look like there is enough room on either side to add a golf cart lane without tearing down a bunch of houses or taking a big chunk of people's yards, and this is not going to happen. The county maintains the road, so it's doubtful the Morses could be held liable for past poor planning.

The most logical thing that could happen is to close Morse north of CR466 to through traffic and make it local traffic only. Until then, people living south of CR466 should avoid this section.

Traveling north on Morse above 466 is bad enough in a car. In a golf cart it is sometimes terrifying.

No kidding, this became evident as soon as TV was extended south of CR 466. Of course at the time when it was initially built golf carts were only permitted on roads between sunrise and sunset and no one thought that Morse would become a major north-south artery. Folks who wish to complain now have to understand that Morse Blvd has been a county road for years and the developer has no responsibility for fixing the problem.

After years of study and complaining a few years ago, Sumter County made some improvements.(widening bike/golf cart lanes, traffic lights at San Marino and Rio Grande, adding turn lanes at those intersections with Morse Blvd.) Unfortunately a good fix was not developed for the golf carts traveling south that must cross north and southbound Morse Blvd lanes just north of Morse/CR 466 gates.

So for now, if folks are concerned and want changes, they should communicate their thoughts to the Sumter County Commissioners.

There's no problem with the ROAD. If the cars & carts did the speed limit, watched where they're going and obeyed the rules of the road everything would be fine. The Villages is growing and will continue to grow for some time to come. If the roads were wider the cars would go faster and that would be worse. Slow down and enjoy the time you've got left. JMO

I respectfully disagree. The road and cart path were not designed for the volume of traffic they now experience.

I know it is a quaint idea and not likely to be implemented - BUT - how about if drivers of the cars and carts all do the speed limit, carts not pass another cart and show some courtesy to drivers trying to turn left out of a side street. Such a silly suggestion, huh?

Have you lost your mind ? You are talking about obeying the law and being considerate. How could you ?

I travel that part of Morse frequently and don't have a problem in my cart. Certainly you have to be alert and aware of other traffic next to you.

The big problem, and it occurs primarily during this season, is that the increased volume of cars on the road makes it nearly impossible to make a left turn out of a neighborhood and very difficult making a right turn. The traffic becomes a continuous stream with few breaks. It seems to be better north of Rio Grande.

The real "excitement" is when golf carts or bicycles have to cross the traffic North of the gate. 2 lanes of car traffic merging to one !

Traffic on Morse was one reason I did not buy a house in this area. A very smart person pointed out that it might take 15 minutes to make a turn off the side street onto Morse, especially if you are between 466 and Rio Grand. I try to avoid this stretch of road, as it looks like an accident, waiting to happen.

Widening Morse ain't going to happen. IMHO
