Funny smell to the water
We just moved here, we're in Sumter County, and our house water has a sulfur odor. Does anyone else have this? What have you done to correct the problem? We bought an 8 year old home, not sure why the previous owners didn't notice it.
Thanks for any suggestions or hints. |
That's why you'll have about a dozen companies that will bombard you with phone calls about testing your water. It will smell funny or bad when you first arrive. We even had one neighbor spend $3100 on a fancy water system sold by one of these outfits. After a couple of months you will not notice the water anymore and you'll completely forget about this subject, or until someone brings it up on this board.

Get a basic GE whole house filter( use the carbon element) installed it works should be installed about $300.00

You state the house is 8 years old. Maybe your hot water heater needs to be replaced.

We installed a unit (under the kitchen sink) which makes the water taste fine. I think it was about $30 at Ace Hardware. We replace the filter every six months. |
Hook a hose to your hat water heater turn of the power and let the water run. You may have stale water in it. I had the same issue in a house I own in winter heaven Florida and it cleared up. Good luck
And hope it works. |
Hi True; We moved into a model home about two years ago and we had the same problem, funny smell in the water. It was bad, when you would open the kitchen faucet, you could smell it 30 feet away! We called the builder and he came and ran the water in all the sinks and tubs for a time and it took care of the problem. Have not had an issue since. He also covered the water bill for the month.

Have had that issue in a couple of homes. It seems to come from lack of use. Once water has been used regularly or every faucet turned and letting water run for quite awhile seems to take care of the problem. Usually takes two weeks to a month of good, daily usage to solve the issue. It really doesn't seem to matter if hot or cold water, so I don't think the water heater is the cause.

Me Too
I've been here 2 years now and still have the same smell ; mostly in the shower.
I also get brown stains on the sink in the bathroom. We had a new water heater installed. I went to the water Co. and left a sample of the brown stain which covered a bar of soap. They said they would contact me . They never did !! (6 Months ago ). I have to drink bottled water until I find the problem. |
We had same problem Had TAS install GE pro elite with RO system for cooking and drinking. Perfect water no issues with Water heater.

Has anyone else had a problem with the ice having a bad taste - noticeable once it starts melting? We are in a rental and we are drinking bottled water but once the ice from the icemaker starts melting in a drink, it has a terrible smell and taste. Like a chemical smell/taste. We just bought a home with a newer fridge that has a filter, so hoping our new home won't have the same issue.

I agree the lack of use is the problem. We are in Sumter County also -- south of 466A. While we have an Eco Water System -- absolutely the best although not inexpensive -- that we brought with us from our last house, we have not hooked it up because we don't find any problem with our water. We drink it right from the faucet. I would hook up a hose to your water heater and let all the water run out. It's probably a good idea anyway because I'm sure the previous owner never did that; most homeowners never do. Everyone should do that periodically because you will see a good bit of sediment come out from the bottom of the tank. That will also prolong the life of your water heater. |

I agree. Did you increase your font AGAIN? |
I had the same problem Put bleach in all the drains and let sit overnight. The next day ran water through and the odor is gone. Do this once a month. Hope that helps..
