Proetecting the Everglades but at what cost?

After you read this article you might have some questions, as I did.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/us...th&oref=slogin

Will the State of Florida become the producer of sugar?
If not,
What happens to the workers who will lose their jobs?
What will be the result on the price and availability of sugar in the future?
What will State do with the refineries and rail lines?
How will State pay for acquisition and make up the loss of tax revenues?

Why wasn't State and federal Governments looking as Brazil did years ago, to convert Sugar cane into Ethanol which has enabled that Country to become energy independent?

Is this one more example of Environmentalists trumping all other considerations?
..............I am afraid so.

Re: Proetecting the Everglades but at what cost?

This is a very important step for the long-term good of the state.

The population in FL continues to grow faster than the birth/death rate. The main sources of water are finite, with Lake Okeechobee being the main reservoir in South FL. The drought has reduced the Lake (which is not that deep to start with) several feet, and the potential for more serious rationing in South FL is real.

Sugar production requires a LOT of water, and the elimination of satisfying the "sugar" thirst allows more water to be available for the population.

So, it's a trade-off - who needs the water more?
