Florida Drivers License?
I am curious to know, if you are permitted to have two different state drivers licenses..
I was going to get a Florida one, while here but must I surrender my Pa. one?? |
Re: Florida Drivers License?
I just got a FL only driver's license, and you keep your old one too.
I went to the Lady Lake office and it was pretty easy there (it's behind the Microtel hotel heading to Leesburg - turn BEFORE the hotel) You need your old driver's AND your social security card. $20 |
Re: Florida Drivers License?
They charged us $25.25 (like the song) in Belleview.
You need your original Social Security Card or your Original Birth Cert with raised stamp or your passport. You can have your address in Fla or your out of state address on it. Seems strange to have a Florida driver's license with a California address on it; also weird to have two driver's licenses in my wallet. It says "Florida Only" in small print on the back side. |
Re: Florida Drivers License?
2 Questions:
A. Why does one need/want two state licenses? Is it for the purpose of juggling points? B. Assuming y'all are in the 50-60-70 age bracket, you've probably had a SS card for anywhere from 30 to 55 years. Yet I often hear people asking for an original SS card. How anal retentive would one have to be to have the original card after 55 years? A birth certificate, a marriage/divorce certificate, even a DD 214 I could see. but those came later in life. I got my card in my mid teens. I doubt if I could have found it 6 months later. |
Re: Florida Drivers License?
OK..this is the story of the two licenses...
I have a Pa license, it expired, I had no clue till I got to the airport...I now have a renewed Pa license with no pic...I renewed on the computer and have a temporary piece of paper with all my info... I have to wait to get back to Pa, and take my pic.. I tried to rent a car and they refused me, so I thought I could get a Fl license too... Thats is why I wanted two.. |

Before I got my FL license back, I made an appointment at the Social Security Office and got a new card (couldn't find my old one, either). At the same time had another records check done (periodically a good thing) to make sure no one was illegally using my number for employment (a real pain to straighten out with IRS). There was a time in the US when identity theft was a rare occurrence. Not so any more. With 12-20 million illegal aliens in the US, most of whom need to get a valid SSN (their own or somebody else's) in order to work, SSN/identity theft has exploded. The ID theft victim usually finds out well after-the-fact when IRS comes a'calling, looking for taxes on income earned but not reported (because you didn't know someone was working with your SSN) - and that can be a several-thousand dollar cost to the victim to eventually straighten out. |
Re: Florida Drivers License?
When I relocate to FL, I would like to have a FL license AND keep my NY license. Reason?
NYState will soon begin issuing what has been termed an "enhanced" license that can be used in place of a passport to/from Canada. I think it can also be used for Mexico and Bermuda. To read about this, go to: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/...0375/1002/NEWS |

Re: Florida Drivers License?
Muncle,
we've got checks with the Florida address and wanted ID with the same address. also, Mrs. JohnN is a disney freak and wants a Florida resident pass (which is cheaper) and a driver's license, even Florida only, qualifies as an ID. And she was a librarian in her working life, and keeps everything (including SS cards) organized. |
Re: Florida Drivers License?
I'm sure there are valid reasons for having two licenses (witness protection, etc.) but I always kinda figured you got a driver's license in the state where you were a resident. Anything else was an attempt to play the system to avoid something. Living in the DC area, I knew a number of people who were de facto fulltime VA residents who had licenses (and plates) from other states in order to avoid paying personal property tax and vehicle registration in the counties in which they lived. A few got caught, but not many.

Re: Florida Drivers License?
Florida driver's license is one of the requirements to be eligible for Homestead tax exemption......b http://dor.myflorida.com/dor/property/exemptions.html |
Re: Florida Drivers License?
Chuckinca...is just a passport enough or is a SS card mandatory? Will be down in 2 weeks and need to know what to bring.
|
Re: Florida Drivers License?
Passport is enough. If you're a permanent Florida resident, then you have to give up your old license. If you're a snowbird, you can have dual licenses but Florida's is valid only in this state. If you attempt to use it out of Florida, you'll be deemed to be driving without a license.
