Loss of Taste

Hi:

I had major surgery on Wednesday. Spent 2 days in the hospital and am home. All during the time in the hospital I thought the food was tasteless. Little did I know that it was my own taste buds. Since my surgery I can't taste or smell anything. The only thing I can taste are sweets and they have to be over the top sweet for me to taste them. Has anyone else had this happen?
Also I've noticed that I am shedding hair. My brush was almost full this morning after I brushed my hair. I have had several surgeries and have never had anything like this happen.

Please ask your doctor. Losing taste is sometimes a neurological symptom. Perhaps even call your anesthesiologist, but I am just guessing that losing hair would have more to do with chemo.

Hope you recover your taste and stop losing hair and feel much better soon. I am hoping and guessing you will. Major surgery is just that, a major event.

Kind wishes,
Gracie

I had the same thing after my heart surgery. Made losing weight easy! However my taste came back and so did the weight!

One of the medicines I was taking caused everything to taste funny, I told the dentist and immediately stopped it and used my own alternative product. Talk to your doctor to see if this is a side effect.

Some antibiotics can cause taste disorders. Any new meds prescribed that you weren't previously on? I would check with your physician if you really want to get to the bottom of this. There are many different reasons for loss of taste which usually goes hand in hand with loss of smell. Fortunately, most are temporary and/or resolvable, as a true loss of taste is a rare occurrence.

I will call the doctor's office tomorrow and see what they say. Thanks for your replies.

Because of the surgery that I had done the doctor required that I drink milk of magnesia every day. I found out that that was the source of the bad taste, metallic taste that was spoiling my taste buds. Everything is back to normal now and everything tastes so good.

Glad you found the answer to your problem and thanks for letting us know. Good for future reference! BTW, hope your recovery is going well and that you will be back to normal routine in no time!

People told me I lost my taste a while back. Then I found out what they meant:

Don't mean to make light of your condition - glad you determined the cause...

Thanks. We needed some humor on TOTV - been in short supply the last few days!
