Vegetable garden

I planted a small vegetable garden in the backyard. I positioned it so that it would get watered when the sprinkler came on. Other days I watered it with the outside hose. Everything grew pretty well. However, the romaine lettuce that I planted grew beautifully but was very bitter. We ended up pulling it out and throwing it away. Does anyone have any ideas as to why it was so bitter? Did the sprinkler(reclaimed water) have anything to do with it? The tomatoes tasted great!

I heard that vegetable gardens were not allowed. :dontknow: I confess I didn't know and had a melon patch my 1st year and the melons were YUCK! Maybe because of the sandy soil? Container gardens are OK. I am sticking with flowers and buying veggies.

Lettuce does not like heat.

I am not picky, but I would have to run the lettuce through the washer with Tide before I ate it after having it be watered from the retention pool with all of that Alligator defecation in it. :dontknow:

We too had heard that (theoretically) vegetable gardens are not allowed other than in pots, but we've seen at least one spectacular vegetable garden, beautifully laid out, with obviously happy gardeners harvesting their crops and no complaints about the quality of the produce....

The soil, if you want to call it that, in TV is not good. To plant a veggie garden it is best to buy soil and composting material and plant your veggies in that mixture.

I also heard that lime added to the soil makes the veggies taste better. I haven't tried a garden yet but that is what I would do.

Re: Vegetable garden

We would love to plant vegetables in The Villages, but we too were told that it was not allowed (at least not south of Rt. 466). A woman I played golf with said one of here neighbors was turned in for having tomato plants, and had to pull them up. Maybe it just depends on whether or not your neighbors want to turn you in. Sidney, just curious, what village did you see the nice veggie garden in??

Re: Vegetable garden

Share the veggies with your neighbors so they won't turn you in.

Watering with reclaimed water? Seriously, is it a problem?

I would love to know. The deer eat everything I try to plant here in Ohio.

Although reclaimed water is supposed to be OK, I still wouldn't eat anything watered with it.........
I would be more concerned about the poisen put into the ground around your home to kill termites for up to five years...This is done at all home sites by the developer.....

My nieghbor had a garden and gave me a tomato .....I haven't been able to look at a piece of wood sence........So there must be something to it !!!!!

However this is all academic as veg. gardens are not allowed in THE VILLAGES!!
