NEW YORK MOVING COSTS

we are, probably 12-18 months from being "Villagers"....one consideration is moving expenses

while we plan to liquidate (i.e. sell or discard) much of our furnishings....there are still some that we will need to move, as well as a number of boxes of course

if there are any former NY residents out there that have recently become Villagers and used the services of a commercial mover, we would be very interested in hearing about costs so we can plan accordingly.

Re: NEW YORK MOVING COSTS

We just moved our stuff from NY (Staten Island) to TV. We used one of the PODS you see around. Like you , we moved mostly boxes, but there was a treadmill and some furniture (2 dressers, a large curio cabinet, a kitchen set).
We had the POD put on the driveway in April. In June they picked it up and sent it south, so we had 2 months to pack the boxes into the POD. On June 30th the POD was delivered to my house in TV, and on July 1st we had 2 moving men unload it for us. They picked the empty POD up on July 2nd.
It all worked like clockwork.
The rental for 2 months on my driveway was $200 per month, so we had it for 3 months (April 16 to July 2nd - no partial months credit). The total for the move including the 3 months rental was just about $2500. It could be lower if you do it faster and avoid the extra 2 months of rental. And like everything else these days, fuel cost may impact future moves (but they will affect all moving companies).
What's neat about the POD is:
1) Ground level loading and unloading - no ramps or lift gates to deal with.
2) Flexibility for time to load it up - no mess of boxes in the house, we slowly put them in the POD.
Good luck with your move!

You do not state what part of NY you live in. There is a moving company, near Fishkill - Mid Hudson Valley, that goes to TV I think twice a month. He charges by the square foot of the space you need.

I know he will travel to other areas to pick up furniture. He is extremely reliable. If you need his info I will look for it.

John, I will email my friend who gave me this info. We decided to get all things new to us in TV as we still have a home in NY.

I did speak with the moving company and I was impressed with how they would have worked with us, if this was the route we would have taken.

We live in upstate NY and have just engaged the services of reloc-cube which is the same format as the pod. They will bring the cube to our driveway, leave it for a few days so we load it, then they'll send it on to ocala, fl until we instruct them to send it to The Villages. They're leaving at our place in NY on Aug. 8th, and will store it for 1 month in Ocala at $125/month. The total will be $1800. Hope this helps.
