Question about buying a car out of state

Has anyone traded in a Florida registered car out of state and then tried to register the newly purchased car in Florida? Is there a grace period (so many days from date of purchase to getting it registered and titled in Florida)? How does this work?

Also, when you trade in a car in Florida, do you get to keep the same license plate or do you need to get a new one?

Thanks for any information!

I suggest that you stop in the Sumter County office and ask. In some cases I have had my questions answered without having to wait to go in to the desk area.

When you purchase a vehicle out of state, most if not all states have what's called an in-transit permit, or similarly called. This permit permits you ample time to return the vehicle to FL with ownership papers for your title & registering process along with proof of valid insurance coverage. This info could vary, but if your going through a dealer they should be able to specifically answer your questions for you.

The following pdf document will answer your question.

I gifted my Fl registered car to my daughter in NY. I kept the Fl plate from my car. 4 months later I bought a new car in Fl and used my old Fl plate which saved me that initial $200 or so first time Fl registration cost.
