9 Holes on Championship Courses - Good or Bad?
 

I'm just wondering generally about signing up for an available tee time for nine holes only on a championship course. Sometimes I want to play but simply don't have time (or the desire) to dedicate the five or six (or more :shocked: ) hours out of my day REQUIRED TO PLAY 18 HOLES, INCLUDING TRAVEL TIME TO AND FROM, WARMUPS, ETC.



Is it a generally accepted practice? Is it frowned upon by the general championship playing community? Is there any official position by the powers that be?



Thanks for any information or thoughts you can provide.

Can only play at certain times. Usually early afternoon. No problem.

Nine holes are fine. But 18 does not take 5 or 6 hours. 4 hours 15 minutes is about normal and I play three times a week. Once in a while play may be 4 1/2 hours.

I wasn't really talking about just on-course time. Add in the to-from-prep, etc. times and that's the time out of the day I was referring to. Considerably more than the time just for the round..

1)It's never taken more than 4.5/4.45 hrs...
 

for 18 holes here...that said your question is questionable as there has never ever been any place I've played that cared how many holes you play or don't play...pay the rate allowed at the time you want to play and leave it at that...

It amazes me how difficult is to post a topic that somebody doesn't find objectionable. Geesh.

Championship golf is typically thought of as an eighteen hole game. And it's easier in TV than any other place I've played to join a group of perfect strangers that might have eighteen hole plans. What in the world about my question could anybody but an overly suspicious type find questionable?

For what it's worth, I didn't find your question the least bit questionable!

I think you misunderstood. :) I just meant that, with prep time, travel time to and from the course, etc., it takes roughy 6 hours out of your day to play 18 holes on a championship course. Sometimes I just don't want to take that much time, so I was asking how generally acceptable it is to just play 9 holes instead.

I pretty much had my answer after the first few replies...thank you folks. ;)

This time of the year you can play 9 holes on any championship course at any time of the day. If they pair you with a group that is playing 18 holes you can drop out after your 9 holes are completed..... NO PROBLEM at all.

Executive courses are great. Great practice. They are in pretty good condition for the amount of play. Easy to walk.

One of my favorite times is late afternoon / evening, with the sun going down.........just a totally different color and look to the course. (& no, this is not the only time you can play 9 holes)

:coolsmiley: OP, you might be surprised how many feel the same as you about the total time it takes to play 18 holes of golf.

There are generally two types of golfers who play the championship courses in TV. First is what I call the "traditional golfer"---most of these are priority members and they carry handicaps and play about 3 or more times a weeks. Second, is the less serious golfer who prefer to play nine holes (some for time and others because of age etc.).

Lately, I find myself in the second category more than the first. I have found the Championship Courses very welcoming and a pleasure to deal with for those that just want to play nine holes---for whatever reason.

The USGA is encouraging more golfers to play nine holes just for the reasons in your post. Fore!
