rules for pets in TV
We will be moving to TV with our 5 lb Shorkie over the summer. Is there somewhere I can check out the rules for pets before we get there?
Thanks. Leslie |
A copy of the restrictions should be in your closing papers. Each district is a little different.

Thanks

Please please please have your dog on a leash even if he/she doesn't "need" it. I almost hit a big dog with my cart because he wasn't on a leash and came running out of the garage. After I stood my cart on end to stop (it is a slow gas cart but I was going the full 18 mph), the owners stared at me like I was wrong. All I could do not to run over the owners.

Also, lots of poop bags!
|
I always slow down when approaching animals and children.

You will find that most people in The Villages love dogs. Of course you will need to walk your dog on a leash, pick up after him and make sure you don't let him use anyone's lawn for a bathroom. There are three small Village provided dog parks. Plus there is a wonderful private ten-acre dog park on CR 101 called Doggie Doo Run Run. If you want directions there, please PM me. There is a search button above, you can search by subject on any topic. Or if you have questions, please feel free to ask them on TOTV. |

Lesdavenator asked in a very pleasant and respectful way about rules for pets with regard to their 5 lb Shorkie. They have done everything right and nothing wrong. Most people in The Villages love dogs . As an owner of two dogs, I find that it's hard to go for a walk without a few people asking if they can pat my dogs. Let's welcome Lesdavenator to The Villages and show a little of Florida's Friendliest Hometown, instead of responding in a hostile way. |
Be careful with those retractable dog leashes and golf carts. There have been several tragic accidents like this that I know of in this area. If you are adept at using this kind of leash then you should be OK. But a slip up and the dog could get hit.
I second Barefoot's recommendation of Doggie Doo Run Run. They do not allow dogs that are aggressive though or over protective of their masters. There have been a few problems like this too at DDRR. You just have to observe how the dogs interact with other dogs as well as with people. I run across dogs that seem bad with other dogs on walks but the owners have always known to keep their dog away from other dogs if it is a dog with some kind of social problem. Also for dogs on Squares. Some dogs do really well with all the commotion, others not well at all. Take a test run at a time when the Squares are not so busy to see how your dog handles the noise, people, kids, golf carts, cars, etc. on the Squares. A short leash is also a very good idea too on the Squares. |
Also be careful of how the dog is secured in the golf cart. I see many dogs just sitting in the passenger seat and some with a leash around the neck. Dogs in carts always make me smile, but this cuteness could have a bad ending.

Please make sure your dog has a harness when he is in your golf cart, not a collar, and that he is fastened in with a short leash. One abrupt stop with a collar and he could strangle. If he suddenly feels like chasing a squirrel across a busy road, the harness will secure him. Some people buy a stroller for their small dog so they can take him to the Town Square with no danger of getting stepped on. There are a few pet-friendly patios where you can take your dog. Square One Burgers even offers a pet menu for your Shorkie! |

I do also have to avoid some pooches he has a problem with for some unknown reason. There are some dogs that just annoy him for some strange reason. He is a rescue so we do not know the elements that brought about his often strange personality. Other dogs might have the same problems as there are a lot of rescues in the Villages with gaps in their known histories. |
