Re: Any ideas of how to get rid of Migraines

My Dr. wrote me a Rx for Imitrex and it works well for me. I don't get them often, but when I did, I had to lay down in the cold, dark with an ice bag and try to sleep it away.

Good luck. No OTC med worked as well as the Imitrex. The one OTC that even helped a little was Tylenol Severe Sinus.

Agreeing with blueeagle. However, I'd like to suggest you identify the triggers of your migraines..... what activity, event, food, or mood initiates the headache ? Once you know what these are.............. you have a better chance of prevention.

In my case, it was stress, going without eating, consuming food with msg, flashing lights, time of the month, ETC. Perhaps avoiding these elements might help thwart the onset of the headache.

Please seek medical attention. I tried everything for years and then found out I had a clotting disorder that caused the migraines. We can never be too careful.

I agree with CIB. MSG was one of my triggers and I inquire at every Asian restaurant if they use it or not. Another of mine is certain aromas - some colognes or perfumes can put me under as well as some household cleaning products. Good luck!

I could not take prescription medication for my migraines and still work as an air traffic controller, so my neurologist had me try two extra strength Excedrin and two motrin as soon as I felt a migraine coming on. It works great for me.

Good Luck.

If you haven't tried topamax, ask your doc about it.

My husband suffered for many years with migraines, and tried everything he could to get rid of them. Someone suggested he try a chiropractor, and he was willing to try anything at that point. (He was getting two or three headaches a day) After his first visit he was able to stop all the medications that the doctors had prescribed, and within a month he was headache free.

I suffered from occular migraines for several years. My dr. prescribed beta blockers (before Imitrex) and it worked wonders. Hope this helps.

Re: Any ideas of how to get rid of Migraines

I would lose almost four days a month because of Migraine before menopause. It was hormonally triggered. Imitrix IS the most wonderful drug. It stops the swelling of the blood vessels in the brain and doesn't just cover the pain. Anyone who has had a migraine knows how foggy you are in the midst of a migraine. It acts within one half hour and the migraine and the fogginess is gone. Imitrix completely changed my life. It is the single best improvement in medicine (to me) in the past twenty years.

I am entirely a traditional medicine advocate and not into homepathic at all.

Here in Cincinnati just recently, a man who owned a company that manufactured so called "healthy additives" was sent to jail along with several people who worked for him and family members too. He was the one that had the advertisement on television about "Why is Smiling Bob Smiling?"

In my opinion many (not all) of these homopathic remedies are dangerous and border on "quackery".

I'm a traditional medication advocate. If your male try Viagara, if your female give some to your husband. lol :joke:

I suffered from severe migraines for about 10 years.
Also hormonally triggered. Fumes was my next worse trigger.
Mine would occasionally go into seizures.
The only thing that worked for me was a big shot of Demerol.
None of the typical migraine drugs worked. Tried em all.
My neurologist put me on an aspirin a day therapy to thin the blood in my brain and allow it to circulate better. It did help.

Rarely have them now, but when I do feel one coming on,
Excedrin Migraine works.

migraines

My daughter has tried everything. The only med that works for her is a med called Maxalt or Magsalt. I dont know the spelling.

The triggers need to be avoided.

I still get a "pale" version of a migraine when I eat yogurt. Like an idiot I still try it every once in awhile. I noticed that Schuler said that her husband would get several migraines a day. Migraines last for more than 12 hours usually. For years I thought they were sinus headaches because of the swelling inside one nostril that would accompany them.

Migraine

I was getting migraines 3 or 4 times a month for the last 15 years. I had seen neurologist after neurologist. I came to the Villages and seen Dr. Cruz he prescribed Amatriptyline one a day to prevent migraines and I can say they have lessened by 75%. I was using Relpax for the migraines when I got them and now I can use the Walgreen Brand for migraine and it works great. I really think the daily pill of Amatriptyline does the job.:a040:
