Wireless setup
 

Hello. We just closed on a house last Monday and we were here for the week to get things settled. We leave tomorrow without activating a router.

So.. does anyone have an idea how I could do this without physically being here?

We will eventually have renters in it before we return.

I had purchased my own modem and belatedly began working with Comcast before running out of time. They could not activate it remotely, possibly because we had Directv installed (?? that's what they said).

The Comcast after-hours/weekend crew may be part of the problem. They don't appear to have either the skill set or the systems security credentials as their regular weekday support staff. Their regular weekday support staff tour begins Mon at 8 am. I'd wait till 8:15 am. That's going to be your best bet. Someone needs to be there on-site with some basic computer skills and a lot of patience. Otherwise you'd have no way to verify that you actually have Internet connectivity. Comcast can be one of life's real challenges. Good luck. I don't believe my wife would be up to it!

adk77, someone will have to physically be there for the setup and testing - even if is to let a tech enter your house. Maybe your home watch company can send someone.

If you have to rent with no wi-fi and tell your renter they can try and set it up if they like.
Give then a password to use.
You probably plug the router into the cable wall outlet. If the router has a button just push it and the computer and wi-fi should work.You might need Comcast to do something on their end.They might have to tell their system that the router is ok.

If it was that easy, ADK77 would have had it set up already!

While I was there, I was reading something about "pairing", which one does if there is not a laptop or desktop present to plug the ethernet cord into. One plugs the power cord in and the coaxial cable in, and then starts the pairing process. Anyone know how this works?

I've only heard the term pairing used in reference to setting up wifi or Bluetooth network access for a phone, camera, or printer. I thought your problem was Comcast internet access for your router?

Have more than one thing I'm thinking about.

Some WiFi routers have a button on them that you can push to pair. Say a guests comes to your home. You can push a button on your router which will let anyone in range connect to it, lets say in the next 30 seconds. Thus you do not have to give out the password or maybe better remember the password. This is not on all routers. I have a WiFi extender that has the button and it worked with all of my computers.
This might be a benefit to renters.
