Ooma Warning

I switched to Ooma 6 months ago for phone service. It was costing me $3.83 a month. I was checking my credit card statement today and it showed a charge for $14.54 from them. I logged into my account on Ooma.com and saw I had been charged for the last 3 months @ $14.54. I called Ooma and they told me the small print in my agreement with them states that if I didn't want to upgrade to their premium service in month 4 I had to call them and advise them of such.

This is the same thing Sirus XM radio does and seems to be a trend now among corporations like the Columbia Record Club in the old days lol. Anyway I told them I never wanted the Premier service and they refunded my money.

We recently installed Ooma and just cancelled the trial premium service.

We received two (2) emails from Ooma reminding us that in order not to be charged we had to cancel by the date in the email.

Can't be fairer than that.

If I had received one email I would have agreed with you. But I received none, and I never signed up for their premium service. I did receive various emails asking me to upgrade to premium the last of which was last week. Funny that they were sending these requests since they already had upgraded me 3 months ago.

Sounds like good customer service if they refunded your money. Did I miss something

I would have cancelled if I wasn't happy. I agree customer service was very good and I am happy with Ooma. I just wanted to let people know that they might be signed up for the Premium service without knowing about it. That's all.

That is a good point. We try very Hard not to get into a free for a designated period. I remember Columbia Record Club too well.

That is called "Negative Option Marketing". In some states, it is illegal but I am not sure about Florida. At best it is a shady business practice. You sign up for a 'free' trial or a low-ball trial period for something. At the end of the free trial, you are "automatically" enrolled in some much more expensive package or service UNLESS YOU OPT OUT IN WRITING BEFORE THE FREE TRAIL EXPIRES. Fairly common practice - read the fine print and watch out for this "Gotcha!".

The Ooma terms and conditions are very explicit on this issue.

Terms and Conditions | Free Internet Home Phone Service | Ooma

Section 5 (d)

Also the option not to participate in the Premier Service could have been taken during sign up.

It's always prudent to read the terms and conditions prior to sign up for any service like this.

However it seems as though Ooma treated you extremely fairly.

Does 911 know where you live with an Ooma phone?

It is legal in Florida also. We have just stopped a couple of things before, they got past the trial stage. Amazon Prime is one most recently.

Yes, after you enter your address on a setup webpage.

Do callers complain to you that they hear an echo of their own voice with a 1 second delay?
Yet the call quality on the Ooma end seems fine.
