Programmable Door locks
 

I read on this forum good information on a door lock that you could program with a code via a cell phone to allow people in one time or for renters. I believe does anyone remember that comment? It was in a unrelated topic heading and I have not been able to find it again.
Also any recommendations on locksmiths?

I have a programmable front door lock, but you need to be physically at the lock, and have a special code to reprogram the lock. It can have up to 10 opening codes, and any one or more can be enabled or disabled, using the special code. This lock is by Schlage, and is available from both Lowes and Home Depot.

A word of caution on the units that can be reprogrammed by cell phone, double check the security of these locks. I stayed away from these as I was concerned about hacking the lock to get entry to the house.

Kwikset also sells some programmable models and the nice thing about them is that they can also be easily re-keyed to an existing key. They also integrate with various home automation hubs such as SmartThings (as do the Schlage models). It's all very interesting and futuristic, but I share your concern about hackability. The so-called Internet of Things has a lot of growing up to do with respect to security I fear.

Consumers report did a piece on programmable and mobile lock system. After reading the article I didn't worry so much about someone hacking into the mobile app. It was the kick in factor that got me thinking

I had the free security review by Sumter County Police, then installed the extra long striker plates (brushed nickel are really hard to find!!) with the 3 inch screws. Did this on both the front door and the garage door. Then installed an electronic lock dead bolt on the garage door. The front door already had an electronic lock for the regular lock, and a separate key operated dead bolt. This should slow them down.

I apologize in advance for my stupidity. Do these work during power outages?

Yes. The ones I've seen operate on a 9 volt battery.

Our schlage has a one year battery life

The 2 Schlage locks, use 9 volt batteries (accessible from inside the house only), and each gives you a warning when the battery is getting low. Have only had to change the battery once in twice in about 4 years or more.

I think you may be thinking of a Zwave lock or something to that effect. These are connected to a central panel (usually an alarm system) by a wireless signal and can be controlled remotely. There are also several push button code methods that do not require an alarm and will allow you to set multiple user codes.

Go to Amazon and look up "Zwave locks" and check the user reviews, then pick your poison :).
