Movie Trivia

I thought it might be fun to start a thread dispensing some movie trivia like the star who turned down movie parts, and their subsitution, went on to become a star.

Casablanca was offered to Gary Cooper but he thought the lead character was too shady and refused the part. It was then offered to George Raft. George was famous in Hollywood for not being decisive about the roles he wanted to play, and didn't take it.

Humphrey Bogart accepted and the rest is history.

It looks like Dirty Harry could have been a number of actors as several refused the part before Clint Eastwood took it.

Apocalypse Now was suppised to star Harvey Keitel as Capt. Benjamin Willard. After two weeks of shooting he was replaced by Martin Sheen. The rest is history.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Steve McQueen, Warren Beatty, and Jack Lemmon all turned down the role of The Sundance Kid.

Wow, GC, GR and HB....to me that would have made for three very different movies. I can't imagine Cooper in the role at all, if would have just been a different film. Raft could have pulled it off easily...but again it would have been different. He wouldn't have had the same power that Bogart brought to it.

Jack Nicholson as Michael Corleone in The Godfather. It's hard to imagine someone other than Al Pacino. “Just when I thought I was out…they pull me back in.”

[it looks like i got my tabs mixed up----thanks for the help]

ELVIS was approached to do the movie "A Star Is Born" but the Colonel nixed it. It was said that ELVIS really wanted the part but didn't take it. He had wanted to get away from the style of movies he had made in the past. The part then went to Kris Kristofferson. It ended up being a blockbuster movie.

One was John Wayne and he regretted that decision!

"Gone With The Wind was read by Carole Lombard and she wanted her husband Clark Gable, to play in it and he did.

She wanted the part of Scarlett O'Hara but it went to Vivien Leigh.

BTW - Olivia Havailand just turned 99!!!

Fun topic. Enjoyed them all so far and only knew of a couple of them. So here's mine:

John Travolta turned down Forrest Gump....can't begin to imagine that without Tom Hanks

And this one I'm not 100% on but think I heard many moons ago that Tom Selleck turned down Indiana Jones. That one I can see working actually.

Just a bit of trivia but both Paul Newman and Steve McQueen were at the top of their game in 1975 when The Towering Inferno was made. Both wanted their name at the top of the credits but the both settled on this format...

Steve McQueen

Paul Newman

Who would you say has the starring role ???
