Antenna Question

I have been lurking for a while and have not seen any mention of antennas. Are there any restrictions on putting antennas on the roofs. I'm thinking an amateur radio antenna.
If it's not allowed, what are the hams doing?
TIA,
Bob

Bob & Linda,
Have you checked the clubs?

Hi Bob and Linda,

Yes, there is a ham club in TV. They can tell you everyteeeeeng.

We rented for a month there and Mr. Boomer attended their meeting. There is a club for everything in TV. Mr. Boomer's favorite club while we were there was the Airplane Hangar Flyers. Every kind of pilot you can think of. Right there in TV. Talking about flying.

It is a full time job just being Mr. Boomer. He seems to be attracted to expensive hobbies. He also owns every power tool you can think of. He knows how to use them and installed hardwood floors in our house so I encourage that hobby.

Actually, I am pretty good about encouraging his hobbies but I do not want antennas coming out of my house. Having them coming out of my head is quite enough.

But hams are a resourceful bunch. They always know what to do.

I have said on here before that I keep trying to interest Mr. Boomer in less expensive hobbies. Like perhaps carving polar bears out of soap.

Re: Antenna Question

If you check with the FCC regulations you can install a tower of under 200 feet. Local regulations don't apply.

Check to make sure.

It may be legal, but I bet you wouldn't be among the "Favored Villagers" if you put up a 199-foot tower with a tribander on top. :o

Re: Antenna Question

I hope there are no restrictions. People with this hobby have helped out others in distress many times. Hope you let us know if there are restrictions so maybe we can support you in your efforts. As long as it is not a horrible sight, why not be able to support your radio? :dontknow: Good luck.

Hey Tony,

Standing behind me, reading this thread, is Antenna Man - Oh Wing-ed One - Keeper of the Miter Saws & Pneumatic Floor Nailer and all around heckuva good guy, Mr. Boomer. He is giving me instruction, spoken in fluent ham-ese, so that I can send you a PM regarding your above post. I have no idea what he is trying to tell you. I am but the messenger.

A neighbor has a quad made from pcv that he hoists up his flagpole. 6 meter I think.

Re: Antenna Question

Sorry to disagree with my longtime ham friend Tony, but the FCC has specifically excluded communities with deed restrictions. No local goverment can forbid antenna tower construction as long as it within the guidlines, however, deed restricted communities can. The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) has fought this issue to an unsuccessful conclusion.

Re: Antenna Question

There are many ways to make a house ham-quality. Am a fan of "hidden antennae" and used to be quite creative when I lived in town houses and apartments. I still have "hidden antennae" at my home, just so the neighbors don't blame me everytime ComCast has a hiccup.

Having a 4-element quad with a kilowatt on the low bands may not be too cool, but a trap-dipole in the attic or a vertical in the back yard will go unnoticed.

Have not checked in with the TVARC yet, but am sure thre are several members with very ingenius antennae that their neighbors don't recognize at all.

Re: Antenna Question

OK. Maybe I should apologize to all of you for this. Or maybe I should just embrace the whole idea. I really do not know. And answers will vary anyway.

I fear I have turned into some kind of savant since I started here on TOTV. Not an impressive or creative savant. You know, the ones that do the music stuff and the math stuff or maybe at least have calendars in their heads.

Oh no. Not that kind of savant. I fear that I have become a TOTV savant. A topic starts to roll and suddenly I remember old discussions on here. Next thing I know, I find myself up there on search putting stuff like "ham radio" in that little box.

So anyway, if you want to read another ham radio discussion, here it is:

https://www.talkofthevillages.com/sm...ic,5042.0.html

And now, I think many of you may be glad to hear that I have recently spilled my morning coffee all over this keyboard. Kind of a Folgerian slip instead of a Freudian slip I guess.

Anyway, I thought I had it all cleaned up. But now the keys are sticking. Mr. Boomer gets a little tired of my spilling stuff on my keyboard. But he always goes down into his old computer museum that is housed in our basement and returns with a new (different) keyboard.

So I will go tell Mr. Boomer what I have done. He will rescue me with a new keyboard. I told you those hams are resourceful types.
