We are Villagers

yet we are ripping each others throats out in the political threads. All of the candidates running in this election are self serving. IMHO, if we think any of them care about us over themselves, then we have been consuming another flavor of Kool-aid. Rather than fight amongst ourselves, why aren't we banding together to demand change from all of them.
Every stinking one of them is a politician. It should be us against them..making them do our bidding. Instead, we all fight each other while they take our tax dollars and enjoy, misappropriate, waste and spend those dollars with what appears to be very slack oversight.
Neither party will fix this nation if we remain with the status quo.
We seem to have a lot of "**** and vinegar" fighting one another. What could we do by banding together and demanding that wrongs be righted? Many of our tax dollars seem to be thrown to the wind while many in this country lack health care and education. That is criminal. TOTVr's...please..we are few but our voices together can be heard. We have the net at our fingertips to spread the words of unity across this country.
I don't think any of the current crop running for office are worth us fighting over. IMHO.

Sam. I just read your post to Sweetie, who just brought me lunch and he, always a man of few words, and ten times smarter than me....said
"Well I agree".

Unfortunately you are so right, Sam. I also understand why Johnny asked for a moratorium. We the American People should demand accountability!

And, after the election, they'll all laugh, shake hands and go out for a drink!

Thanks, sweet Gracie. I get so bent out of shape when I see all the waste of our tax dollars. I don't mind paying taxes when my money is spent wisely. I wonder if 30% of our tax dollars are spend wisely. Being of thrifty Scottish ancestry, it makes me furious when our leaders squander our tax dollars, our good will, our good name and our well being as a nation. They seem to think our treasury is there to plunder. Our Republic is in a state of decline that has me terribly worried. I think we all know this in our hearts and take out some of our frustrations on this board-at one another. It needs to stop. The country seems so polarized with this election. We're all against each other while "business as usual" goes on in the halls of power. At the end of the day, the pols probably wine and dine together and laugh condescendingly at "the unwashed masses". I'll bet many have inwardly smiled in agreement over Marie's infamous "Let the eat cake" quote. Hmmmm..does this sound a bit Orwellian???

I completely agree. Yet, the reality is that this country is polarized and the candidates reflect just how polarized it is. We just have to muddle through the election and pray that whoever wins, does not add to this. I also think people are so angry and frustrated because we feel like we don't have any control anymore. We used to breath a sigh of relief when we voted, actually feeling as if we've accomplished something. After he debacle of the 2000 election, many can only think of vote fraud. I agree, we're in a very sad state indeed. But, I am happy to see so many young people taking an interest in politics again. I have a great deal of faith in them. I also have a great deal of faith in all of us Villagers. I do think, at least I hope, that political discussions are not taking personally. I hope is that all Americans, every one, will be able to afford to "eat cake."

If they have the cake will they be able to afford health insurance?
What will/can we do to make our elected officials keep the promises they so glibly make to us during the campaigns? Simply voting is not enough.

Sam, I could not disagree more. You say should demand "change" from all of them, but what does that mean? You and I often agree on political issues, but I'll bet the changes I want and the changes you want are vastly different. Throw in the lunatic liberal fringe and the ultra conservatives and you have a complete dichotomy of views and desires.

You cite as an example of national failures the current situation in education and health care. I tend to agree that both are major problems, as likely most do. HOWEVER, what are odds that my interpretation of the problem and even more so, my view of viable solutions, would bear any similarity to those of the Larry, Moe, and Shemp of the liberal left? Could we possible agree on school vouchers, teacher testing, elimination of tenure, dissolution of the NEA, etc.? What about mandatory health insurance, government run health, free (meaning taxpayer funded) health care for all?

Politics is an adversarial process. That's not necessarily bad. We each have our view, our prejudices, our desires. In the political arena, we fight for those things. If they are not worth the fight, they're evidently not that important to us.

There does not seem that there is all that much ordinary citizens can do if the candidates do not keep their promises. It kind of takes someone with their own printing press to do something about getting problems solved. Unfortunately the media seems to be the hands of fewer and fewer people.

Maybe Obama/Biden and McCain/Palin will be different animals depending on who gets the electoral college vote but in the Washingtonian zoo I think that there is no such animal as a promise keeping politician.
