Aren't they beautiful creatures? Many varieties and colors.

Sooooo much bigger than we had in MA.

Don't they have a nasty stinger?

Am I the only one that is completely creeped out and maybe a little scared of dragonflies? I’m glad this board is anonymous because that was a bit embarrassing to admit. What time of year are they more prevalent, so I know when to plan my vacation :-)

I used to love the spring arrival of the dragonfly as they got rid of most of the mosquitos, a reason why they sometimes seem to fly towards you. They are harmless unless you are an insect. My daughter called them little pretty helicopters.

My mother called them "darning needles"--I wonder why

I don't think that was it:1rotfl:

Dragonflies are completely harmless to humans. No sting, no bote, no sewing!

They love to eat mosquitoes.

Just enjoy their beauty!

Did you know prehistoric giant dragonflies were the size of an eagle? Fly swatters must have been pretty big back then.

My mother called them "devil's darning needles". Something about sewing our mouths shut - probably wishful thinking on her part.

No! Over the years I've learned to tolerate them. They used to scare the cr@p out of me.

Could have something to do with Grandma telling me to stay away from them; they'd sew me up. She called them 'Sewing Needles'.

ETA: I see I wasn't the only one!

Dragonflies were called "Dining Needles" where I grew up in north jersey. My pediatrician told me that I was allergic to them and now I find out they don't sting at all. I have been carrying around the Emergency Dining Needle Kit he gave me for the last 55 years. Just my luck, my mom finds a pediatrician that plays practical jokes.

And I'll bet next you'll say that Chicken Pox has nothing to do with chickens.
