It didn't SAY pulling out of a parking space. It said pulling out of a parking lot. Who knows. I know that until the end of March, me and mine are on high awareness. I hope we who are reading this today will all be alive and well then. |

Doc. The driving here is from the Twilight Zone. When we get crowded up, (for us) you thank goodness every day if you don't do road rage. I can hardly drive sometimes for just shaking my head. Gooney. Just plain Gooney. Un (bad word) believeable!!! |
Wow, Gracie, you're getting non-persnickety! :ho:

To me this is another case of being "right or dead right". Of course the pedestrian has the right of way, but what good is that to you if you are laying in a hospital bed being right. I can be backing out of my driveway and people will walk right behind me, backing out of a parking spot at Publix and people walk right behind me. If I see a car with lights on or moving the last thing I am going to do is to take a chance and walk behind them. But, then, I love life and want to live every year I've been given.

Pedestrians are not always right but they are always pedestrians and that gives them an edge.
Backing is always the primary basis for a traffic violation and hence why it is termed unsafe backing if an accident occurs. Those of us with some years here have witnessed the peace of the summer months quickly disappear. ( I am thankful for those few years) This place is described as big but it is compressed and main roads are limited and all those limited roads lead to Rome and when we are all traveling to Rome well...... The demographic here makes it obvious that traffic/accident issues both on highways and multi-modal paths will be a certainty. I have seen some people driving carts that looked so fragile I wondered how they even were able to hang on to the steering wheel Most who lived north all recount fondly the experience of a wonderful spring, summer and fall but as the leaves dropped they braced for the dreaded winter months and snow. Well it is the same thing here except instead of snow we have a blizzard of people returning and the lazy hazy days are over. I am not complaining and I am not stating it is good or bad thing . I am simply stating an observation about a reality and if I am anything it is a realist. And as the southern extension pass 466A continues so too will the blizzard and all the good and horribles that accompany it. I opine others can decide |
I just had a thought. some people are assuming that the driver was backing up. The story does say that he was pulling out of parking lot near Main and Del Mar but that could mean one of the diagonal spaces around the square.
If the driver was backing up and using a video back up camera, he wouldn't see someone off to the side of his car. I'm also thinking that if a younger, stronger person was "clipped" by a side view mirror of a car traveling a three or four mph he probably wouldn't have sustained any injuries. Not saying that this matters, but it's interesting that the headline reads "84 year old hit by car in SS Town Square. The we read, he was "clipped" by a side view mirror. I certainly hope that the gentleman is alright and recovers. But I do think that the headline made it seem worse than what it was. I grew up driving in Boston. In fact I drove as a courier driver in downtown Boston for a few four month stretches. I also lived in drove in Manila, for about a year. Some surveys show that Manila has the worst traffic and drivers in the world. So, driving here for me is a piece of cake. I will say that while driving in those places I learned to stay very alert and aware of my surroundings and to drive very defensively. I always expect people to do the wrong thing. |
I saw the spot where the man was hit, the car and the injured person on the ground. The vehicle was puling out of the parking lot right in front of MVP. The vehicle was in the process of completing a right hand turn heading toward DelMar ( where the villages box office is)
The pedestrian must have just stepped put of the adjacent lot & got clipped by the passenger side view mirror. A driver pulling out of the lot would most likely be looking left as that is where traffic would be coming from. Bad timing & circumstances from both parties. |
