What is this? Moth? Humming bird?

It was late and almost darkout so we couldn,t quite discern exacty what it was. The wings and the color look off for a bird but the eye and perhaps a beak?

It's a hummingbird moth.

These are so interesting. They are also called a sphinx moth. They metamorphis from the ugly green tomato (or tobacco) horn worm. The sphinx moth family is large.

I took a picture of one several years ago in Indiana before moving here. It was so different I had to look it up to identify it. I haven't thought of that until I saw your picture, which is very good!

we have them in the summer, and yes, when you first glance at them they look like hummingbirds, but they come out at dusk and don't have the right body. fascinating though.

Definitely a moth. Evening feeder unlike hummingbirds.
