Poisonous snake in The Village

I almost stepped on this snake and then was able to get some photos of it. It has been identified as a coral snake. The people who identified it said to remember that "a black nose on a snake means it is deadly". I saw this snake down by Lake Deaton.

Red and yellow kills a fellow
Red and black is a friend of jack.

One is cobra, the other is king snake.

It looks like a coral snake.

That is NOT a 'cobra'. It is a coral snake. I am hoping that it was just a goofy spell check error that said the wrong kind. Yes, a 'coral' snake is poisonous. Good that you were able to take the photo.

It was a mistake. It is a coral snake.

Your version is very similar to the version we learned many, many years ago in elementary school to identify a coral snake"

Red on yellow kills a fellow
Red on black, poison lack.

Either way, this is a lifesaver.

"Poisonous" snake is actually incorrect. The snake is venomous. Poisons are ingested, venoms are injected.

Just a useless tidbit of information.

Anyhow, there ARE coral snakes here in The Villages as well as water mocassins and rattlesnakes. They are a bigger danger to your dogs who might go sniffing in the high weeds near ponds or to grandkids who might play in those weeds.

Coral snakes live among tall grasses or bamboo.

Thank you for lesson. Much more benefitful than time spent on political forum.

I've never tested this, but they say a coral snake's mouth is so small it can only bit in a small area such as a finger or toe. We live in a CYV and when they were new in 2011, we had a neighbor find a rattlesnake in his garage. It was soon after that we had installed the garage door screen.

I recommend that for anybody that leaves their garage door up all the time. We do because for one, our washer and dryer are in the garage. Also it keeps out bugs and gators or anything else, like something looking to steal. If they're in the garage, then you know they had to cut the screen to get in, that makes their actions pretty self-explanatory.
