Free 50" Plasma needs work, 4 yrs old
 

Hi:

I have a 50" LG Plasma TV. It worked wonderfully until recently when I turned it on and it turned itself back off. That is the only symptom. We have replaced it rather than have it repaired. When working it has a beautiful picture. If you know if anyone who tinkers and would like to have this, please email me. jnieman@aol.com. I have not had it diagnosed so I have no idea what could be wrong. I thought I would try to give it away first to keep it out of the landfill. If I get no responses I will call trash pickup. Thought I'd give it a shot.

Put it on Craigslist, will be gone in less then an hour. I had a 55 LG plasma, same problem, 3.5 years old. Found out it was going to be easily in excess of $400 to repair. Put it on CL list and had 5-6 responses in 10 minutes, had to take the ad down.

Thanks Tinker I am keeping my fingers crossed. It's just such a nice TV with a beautiful picture. My dad worked on TVs as a kid and I know they are always looking for projects. I did google the problem and people talked about a capacitor problem and said you can order the parts on line and do it yourself. If I was younger and more adventurous I would try it. Hoping to give it a new life. I have my ad posted on Craig's list.

I know the feeling, I am a retired electrical engineer, did all of my own repairs. I did the same goggle search, and decided it was going to be too much trouble. Still dabble with some repairs, like older cars, but this newer stuff is horrible to work on.

Typically these things have a power board and a system board. One probably went bad. If you can get the back off they are usually easy to replace. However, it may not be cost effective given the price of sets these days. I have repaired one of my sets by ordering the part off the internet and I knew exactly what went bad.

Mine had 7 boards, and the symptoms indicated 2 possibly 3 different areas. I called the local LG service tech, he said, THIS BOARD, cost $300, board came in, he installed, and the problem was NOT fixed. Told him to replace original board, and not to charge me for replacement parts. He made an adjustment, partially 'fixing' the problem, then about 2 months later, it failed completely. I figured this was going to become a money pit. The LG plasma TVs have a bad rep for early failures.

TV Has found a new home
 

A fellow TOTV'er decided to give my TV a new home. I am hoping he can fix it and give it many more years to live. yay!

I had a Samsung LCD that had some "issues". Samsung had a nearly 100% failure rate with some LCD sets manufactured during a certain window in time. That was the one I fixed. I also had a Samsung DLP set that had the main board go bad. I didn't bother with that one. More recent Samsung sets seem to be reliable.

Google the symptoms and it show the power board cost and how to fix 25 dollars.

The power board was fixed under the class action lawsuit (caps failed and were replaced). The main board failed after that and there was no fix other than to replace the board. I found a replacement for $200. The set is still going strong.
