Has anyone taken Amtrack from Gainesville to Savannah or to Washinton DC?

Gainesville like The Villages is a BUS STOP for Amtrac. You can catch the bus here - why go to Gainesville?

A comment on Amtrak. Roomier seats than flying or taking a bus. Usually not on time. Don't ask me about my trip from LA to Chicago. Sort of a Greyhound bus on rails, staffed by rude or indifferent people.

I wish they would make rail travel a sensible alternative. I would love to take the train, but after looking at the cost and time, it makes more sense for me to fly or drive to Washington, DC.

If I drive, it'll cost me the price of a hotel room for one night (each way - I figured it is about a 14 hour drive) and two gas fillups. Then I will still have my vehicle available when I get there.

If I fly, I'll get there in no time, but either have to depend on public transportation or rent a car.

We will be driving up in May.

Amtrak has an "Auto train" from Sanford, Fl to Washington, DC.
