How to lose customers

Went to the UPS store( the one next door to Winn Dixie) to drop off a pre paid shipping box from Suddenlink.

The box held a cable box- would have taken 2' of packing tape and taken less than 30 seconds to apply-

The clerk said it would be 81 cents for the taping.

Went to the Safeship store north of 466-they handled everything no charge

I spent way more than the 81 cents on gas- if you nickel dime customers, you won't have many customers in the future.

For someone who claims to spend so much on the finest things, it's hard to picture you driving your mercedes to another store over 81 cents.
Do you expect them to provide their services free to everyone or just you?

wow.

Well, they gave the person in front of me a book of stamps @ face value. And I did drive my Benz to the other store.

I was in my own business and I didn't nickel dime my customers.

The idea is to maintain a relationship, not just do a job !!!

and you couldn't tape the box yourself because......

I was wondering why my UPS stock has risen by $10 a share since late Jan. I guess it was due to the "Don't give away free stuff" policy.

Maybe the government could adopt that motto.

UPS stock has risen because of lower fuel prices, anyone wanna bet they locked in these prices as long as they could-same goes for airlines, and cruise ship companies.

Someone missed the point here. I'm sure it wasn't that the gentleman didn't have 81 cents, it is the idea that a business would charge 81 cents for 2 lousy inches of tape. That in itself is pathetic. I don't blame him for going somewhere else. That's like going to the post office and have them charge you for using their pen. After all, you would be using the ink, right? I guess you can't fix stupid.

I read the post as 2 feet of tape, not 2 inches, no? I can see where a small business might not charge for the occasional use of such supplies to help out a customer, but for a company like UPS? I'm not so sure how it's hard to believe that those little expenditures would add up exponentially!

Besides that, it's absolutely ludicrous to think that ANY business, regardless of size, would give ANYTHING away. I'm pretty sure that nobody goes in to business in order to LOSE money.

I don't care what kind of car you drive, OP..if you feel so entitled, just maybe you're part of the problem.

I was at the Post Office in Fruitland Park and a customer was trying to mail a package and needed packing tape. The customer asked the clerk if they had any packing tape and they said no but you can buy a small roll for X-amount of dollars. They aren't giving it away free either. Can you imagine the people that would bring their packages in and expect the Post Office to use their tape to pack it??

Before everyone blames UPS again, those stores are franchises, they have over 4,400 locations. The franchisee is the one that has to worry about making a profit, and it's not all that easy considering the UPS website shows that a rural location will cost about $139,673 - $254,562 plus $60,000 in liquid assets.

Whether it's 2 inches or 2 feet, the truth is that the OP is one of hundreds of people who go into UPS, USPS, etc.everyday, expecting free tape, or free boxes and packing material, or who don't want to pay the additional postage because it's oversized. As said before, no business can survive by constantly giving things away. To me it's no different than employees stealing from their company thinking they are entitled to the stapler, etc.

Seems like a dollar's worth of fuss over 81 cents.
