He passed away this morning.

I was in Oklahoma in the mid 70's and ended up in Muskogee one day. Went to a country bar that night and when everybody danced it was so noisy, they said that sound came from the sawdust they spread on the dance floor. I guess you have to be an Okie from Muskogee to know why. He died on his birthday, born April 6, 1937. RIP

Saw Merle at the Conga Room at the Sahara in Las Vegas. It was an excellent show. He said that he regretted Okie From Muskogee, but he still sang it. Now both Merle and the Sahara are gone. How sad.

A true country singer who did what he wanted and had no use for political correctness. Men like he are becoming more rare as the years click by. He will be missed.
