Is Lydia Ko the Next Tiger Woods?
 

Is it possible that the golf world has found its next Tiger Woods? Is it possible that this player does not play on the PGA tour, but plays on the LPGA?

I would think that in order to be considered the next Tiger Woods a person would have to compete and beat the best players in the world. Those players are on the PGA Tour.

There can be no category for the best in the world. She may be the best female player but not the best player in the world.

That comment seems a little sexist. :grumpy:

For her sake, I hope some greedy promoters don't convince her to play against PGA stars. Michele Wie, Annika Sorenstam and others once considered the "next big thing" never fared particularly well in PGA events, even when hitting from forward tees. Although Annika did out-drive Fred Funk in one event.

Personally a love the differences between men and women. Their bodies and minds are different. Lydia Ko could be the next Tiger Woods just playing other women for the most part.

Was Tiger ever referred to as the next Jack Nicklaus? Maybe they should compare this young lady to other women golfers.

I think the statement made was just a simple fact of the matter with no gender intent at all:

"...She may be the best female player but not the best player in the world...."

In what way? In order to be the best player in the world, one has to compete against the best players in the world. Those players are on the PGA tour. Everyone is welcome to try to qualify to play on that tour just like Annika Sorenstam did.

My comment has nothing to do with sex. It's simply the fact that if you have a tour that limits or qualifies people, such as the ladies tour, or the senior tour, or junior tour then the person who is the best on that tour cannot be considered the best in the world. In order to do that one would have to compete and win against the best players in the world on the tour that doesn't have restrictions by age, sex or anything else.

Can a woman play in the Masters???

I don't know, but generally if you win an event on the PGA tour you are invited to play in The Masters. so, if a woman played on the PGA Tour and won and event or in one of these other ways Qualifications for Masters Invitation | Masters I would expect that she'd be invited.

Women have been allowed to attempt to qualify for the US Open, I don't know about the other majors.

The point is that Tiger Woods was for a long time the best golfer in the world. An argument could be made that he's the best golfer in history.

That's the best period. Not the best woman or the best senior or best junior or best amateur, simply the best of all. In my humble opinion, in order to call someone the next Tiger Woods they would have to have competed against the best without a qualification.

It has nothing to do with gender. I would say the same for a senior golfer who won twenty events and all four majors in one year on the Champions Tour. They may be the best in their category, but they could not be called the best in the world for that year or of all time.

Ian Woosnam is probably the best golfer under 5'6" in history. Never could he be considered int he same category as Tiger Woods.

She could accomplish the ladies version of the Grand Slam and most folks still would not know who she is. The closest a woman has ever come to being the next Tiger Woods is not even a golfer...Rhonda Rousey.

I agree completely. Calling folks names or suggesting their comments smack of discriminatory behavior is a convenient way to end a discussion not continue it. All too common, especially in the last eight years.

Heck, my vote goes to Tiger's wife Elin; she beat him only using a nine iron.
