Police Dept. sign on 466

I just saw one of those portable signs belonging to the police dept that flashes the following message:
"Stay in right lane unless passing. It's the law"

I hope this means they are going to start ticketing some of these left lane laggards. News6 also has a story about them.Slow left lane driving can result in citation

I agree with the right lane but is their enough room for all the cars in the right lane?

Walter123 04-20-2016 01:04 PM

Seems that a sign like that will just confuse people around here. What if they want to make a left turn? Are they gonna stay in the right lane and then zip across the left lane to the turning lane? Don't say that it is common sense. The law should have nothing to do with common sense. It's a dumb law for local roads with multiple entrances and exits and roads where left turns are permitted. Save that law for the highways.

OMG,are you kidding????? I can't believe you'd think that!

I agree local roads with many business exits and entrances don't need a sign such as mentioned by OP. Perhaps the sign is more in the "rural area" of 466.

That was near the Village of Zamora near the Chula Vista and CR466 t-bone when I saw it a few days ago.

I saw that sign today...stuck behind a car in the left lane on 466 going about 42 mph pretty much from Chula Vista Ave to More!

so true, I thought the left lane passing rule was for hwys.....not for city streets.

When you are closing in on a turn, you need to be prepared and stay in the lane you need to be in to make the turn you need to make.

I say slow down already.......

I agree with the sign. If after all these years if you haven't figured it out then maybe you need to call a taxi or take the bus.

Many people drive very slow in the left lane, seems to me that would bring about a lot of unnecessary lane changing to keep passing the slower drivers, and I don't mean speeders, just driving the posted speed limit. And, as mentioned above, 466 has too many left turns to make it safe. Now you've got people trying to get over suddenly to take a left turn and other people speeding up to pass the slow drivers. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen to me.

Exactly. You said it better than I did. Leave that law for roads like the turnpike, 75, I4, etc. Not local roads. The speed limit on 466 should be 35 mph anyway. There are two school zones where you have to slow to 20 mph. I couldn't tell you how many have blown by me at 40 - 45 mph when the light is flashing to go 20. Let's face it folks, reaction times are not what they used to be.

with common sense".

Now I understand why the phrase "you can't fix stupid" came into being.

Jima64 04-21-2016 06:30 AM

Bad sign use. When they pull you over just point out you are preparing to make a left turn. Of course , if you have been in the left lane for a mile or two the officer will need some convincing.

Hi Fred, Maybe you couldn't understand what I meant and that's OK, but I'll make it clearer for you. I meant that the law is the law and should not be opened to interpretation, common sense is not the same for everyone especially, as you put it, stupid people. That's why we have laws. Get it?
