Nobody Like The Little Dog?
 

<laughing> When I posted photos of the little dog we might be adopting (we have made our interest known....they don't know anything about her, yet), nobody said oh what a cute little dog or don't do it. Everybody dead out there? I was hoping some of you may have adopted a little dog with pre-existing IVDD.

I felt the pup was absolutely adorable. My Lizzie looked exactly like him. She lived to 18. Her littermate Winnie lived to 11. I loved those little pups.

A good friend also had an adorable dachshund. The pup was paralyzed like your little guy. It was very hard on her. She had a lift sling that she would put under him so she could take him outside. He had no bowel or bladder control and wore diapers in the house.

I didn't respond only because I know how difficult it will be to take care of this little one.....however I applaud your courage if you do. It will be hard and you will be one of the few blessed ones that take on such a task.

GEO...the picture of your little doggy wasn't very closeup but I could see him/her lying on the couch. I am sure he is a sweetheart.

I like little dog. In fact, all our dogs adopted.

:agree: Our 2 "girls" are rescued; they have an undeniable love for us. Don't know their past - don't want to know. I just know that they, along with my wife, have been bright spots during some dark times of my life the last couple of years.

There has never been a dog that I did not love. ever.

You are extremely compassionate to adopt a dog with severe medical issues.

I have met dogs I do not like but that has probably had to do something with the owner not having control of the dog or of owners who show up in the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Database like my former Palm Harbor, Florida neighbor and his ill-treated pit bulls. Actually his dogs look like they were friendly dogs. Northpinellas: 2 pit bulls dragged by car, 1 injured

Has anyone adopted a little dog that they knew had disc issues in the past prior to them adopting? I have had dogs who have had to have surgery, but that was after I had owned them for years and years. I don't think adopting one that comes with that issue would be any different. They don't know anything about the little dog, yet, as far as personality or anything else. She won't be available for adoption for probably 7 weeks, I am guessing due to healing and rehab.

Taltaraz725, Thanks. You mentioned the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Database. Is this something that anyone can access on-line? If so, would you have the web address?

I believe it is now in the Search feature of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals web-site.

It looks like I cannot find the resource I used a few years ago to look up the animal cruelty cases in a certain city like in Palm Harbor over a certain range of years. Maybe someone else has used this more recently and can put us on the right track?

at one point I thought my dog might have that and I researched it thoroughly. From what I read the surgery is very successful if dog gets proper rest post-op.

My dog had 3 bulging discs and had the surgery 12/2014. After the surgery she had acupuncture and cold laser therapy sessions the 1st month. The following 5 months I took her for water therapy at The Sanctuary in Ocala 2 to 3 times a week for 5 months. She started to walk about 5 months after the surgery. She still has a limp but is doing fine. It was long process, but to me she was worth the time and money.

JSR22, I'm glad to hear she is still doing good. I remember when you were going through this with her. They are members of the family and if our spouse or child needed surgery we would get it for them. Same way with our dogs.

Not long ago we found out what the laser therapy treatments were all about. Everyone had been saying such good things about it. Our current dog had to have treatments. She had a mild bout with her back....no paralysis. The laser therapy was amazing. Results in our dog were immediate. I add that to my list of things I recommend to people. My husband is hesitant about getting a dog that has already had a back issue. I've already been down that surgical road with two of my dogs and probably will some time in the future with the dog we currently have. They are definitely worth it (they are family). If we didn't do the surgery, we would just find something else to blow our money on. I know most people don't understand getting surgeries for your dog like this (especially non-dog people), but good to know there are others here that get it. And thank goodness for rescues that step up and take in dogs that need surgery and find them new homes.
