Please explain "Waves" on Championship golf

I notice in the Daily Sun the championship courses have an AM Wave from 7:28-9:28 and a PM Wave from 11:56-1:56. Does that mean there are no tee-times scheduled from 9:28-11:56?

Waves are done to 'fill' the course quicker. They send off groups at those starting times on all three nines. The players then rotate to the other assigned 9 after the first 9 are played. It's not a shotgun type which would completely fill the course at once but it is the next best thing. This is exactly the way that PGA events are staged when you see players going off on the 10th hole as their first hole. There is a morning wave and then an afternoon wave since the total time to play 18 is still 4.5 hours.

I think this is correct but maybe someone more familiar with it at TV will fill in the details?

Also - that is why the courses have a limited number of 9 hole slots available prior to 7:28. Those players don't interfere with the wave since they are done after 9 holes and don't need to tee off on 1 or 10 or 19 (for the 3 nine courses) to finish the 18.
